    • Methods and systems for assigning a wireless communication device to a carrier frequency are presented. In an exemplary embodiment, a radio access network (RAN) radiates to define one or more wireless coverage areas using at least two different carrier frequencies. A given wireless communication device (WCD) seeks to engage in a call, and accordingly transmits a probe message to the RAN. In response to receiving the probe message, and based at least on information associated with the probe message, the RAN determines an initial carrier frequency assignment for the given WCD. Preferably, this initial carrier frequency assignment is performed to balance load across at least some of the at least two different carrier frequencies. The RAN then transmits an indication of the carrier frequency assignment to the given WCD. The given WCD may then tune to the assigned carrier frequency and conduct communications using the assigned carrier frequency.

    • What is disclosed is a method of operating a wireless communication device. The method includes, when in a first mode of operation, transmitting an access request to a wireless access node at a first transmit power, starting a first countdown timer, and awaiting an access request acknowledge from the wireless access node. In the first mode of operation, if the access request acknowledge is received within the first countdown timer, the method includes halting the first countdown timer and awaiting a resource assignment message from the wireless access node, and if the access request acknowledge is not received within the first countdown timer, the method includes retransmitting the access request to the wireless access node at a second transmit power and restarting the first countdown timer. The method also includes receiving a control message to enter a second mode of operation from the wireless access node, and when in the second mode of operation, transmitting the access request to the wireless access node, starting a second countdown timer, and awaiting the resource assignment message from the wireless access node. In the second mode of operation, if the resource assignment message is received within the second countdown timer, the method includes halting the second countdown timer, and if the resource assignment message is not received within the second countdown timer, the method includes retransmitting the access request to the wireless access node and restarting the second countdown timer.

    • Methods and systems are defined that support, in a radio access network, measuring the latency between the radio access network and each respective access gateway of a plurality of access gateways. From these measurements, a list of access gateways, rank ordered from lowest to highest latency, is created. If the radio access network receives an incoming call indication designating that an associated incoming call is latency-sensitive, the radio access network will preferably assign the incoming call to an access gateway that is one with a measured respective round trip latency less than or equal to a median measured respective round trip latency. Additionally, the radio access network maintains a profile for at least some wireless communication devices that use its services. When the radio access network receives an incoming call indication for a wireless communication device, the radio access network preferably determines, from the wireless communication device's profile, if the wireless communication device has a history of heavy network usage. If the wireless communication device has a history of heavy network usage, the radio access network preferably assigns the incoming call to an access gateway that is one with a measured respective round trip latency greater than or equal to the median measured respective round trip latency.

    • A method and system is disclosed for dynamically merging wireless service sectors in a wireless communication system. The method and system determines when certain conditions exist under which dynamically merging a plurality of wireless service sectors would advantageously yield an increased data rate for transmissions to access terminals (ATs) operating the plurality, while, at the same time, not resulting in a total traffic load that would be detrimental to system performance. The method and system also incorporate the manner and means of merging sectors so as to cause the plurality of wireless service sectors to operate as a single, dynamically-merged wireless service sector. Each access terminal operating in a dynamically-merged wireless service sector receives the full, combined power of all the sectors of the plurality during transmissions to that AT.

A wireless device storing one or more lists of preferred roaming partners is configured to receive configurations messages from the access networks associated with each of the preferred roaming partners. The wireless device parses the configurations messages and extracts load information from fields included the configuration messages. A load value of each preferred roaming partner is calculated based on the extracted load information. The wireless device selects the preferred roaming partner having the lowest load value to initiate wireless communication over the access network corresponding to the selected preferred roaming partner.

    • Disclosed is a mechanism for efficient channel selection in a wireless communication system. A wireless communication device (WCD) receives from a radio access network (RAN) a channel list message that specifies channels on which the RAN communicates in a coverage area. Further, the WCD receives from the RAN for at least a given one of the channels an expected delta value indicating an expected difference in signal strength between that channel and another channel. The WCD may then take an actual measurement of signal strength on the other channel and apply the expected delta to predict a signal strength of the given channel. Based on the predicted signal strength being threshold low, the WCD may then select a channel other than the given channel on which to communicate with the RAN, and the WCD may then communicate with the RAN on the selected channel.
