    • A VCSEL (vertical cavity surface emitting laser) is formed on the top surface of the substrate having an opposed bottom surface. In one exemplary embodiment, the opposed bottom surface is polished and coated with an anti-reflective coating. A photodetector is disposed beneath the bottom surface and is capable of detecting light emitted by the VCSEL. In another embodiment, an angle selective filter is disposed between the photodetector and the unpolished and uncoated bottom surface. The apparatus urges light emitted by the VCSEL to be detected by the photodetector and limits light from other sources from reaching the photodetector. A method for monitoring the optical output of a VCSEL includes providing one of the exemplary apparatuses, causing the VCSEL to emit light that is detected by the photodetector, and adjusting the optical output of the VCSEL based on the amount of light detected by the photodetector.

    • In a chair having a frame, a fixed seat, and a pivotal back, the frame includes two bridge-supporting legs extending between an upper position and a lower position behind and below the upper position. A transverse bridge fitting removably into openings in the bridge-supporting legs bridges the bridge-supporting legs in at least two orientations. The bridge limits pivotal movement of the back, when pivoted downwardly and backwardly, to at least two reclined positions. In one contemplated embodiment wherein the transverse bridge comprises a beam fitting removably and nonrotatably into the openings and bridging the bridge-supporting legs in two such orientations, a spacer extending along and mounted fixedly to the transverse beam is interposed between the transverse beam and the back in one such orientation but not in the other orientation. In other contemplated embodiments wherein the transverse bridge comprises a transverse axle, similar spacers mounted fixedly to the transverse beam are interposed between the transverse beam and the back, each spacer having a bearing surface conforming generally to a spiral or to a closed, curved shape when viewed axially and adapted to bear against the back at varying radial distances from the axis.

    • The present invention 10 discloses an apparatus and method for a storm shelter which can be used aboveground and belowground, and, may be skin supported. The present invention discloses that its top 11, front 13 and rear 15 surfaces can be made from a single, curved piece of material 12, and, that its sides 14 are made from two straight pieces of material all of which pieces are mounted onto parallel curved fine members 18 which are mounted onto a base frame 16 which is anchored to a foundation 34. The storm shelter of the present invention can be manufactured and pre-assembled in an embodiment having a single piece 12, top 11, front 13 and rear 15 construction or in an embodiment having a multiple piece 46 and 48, top 11, front 13 and rear 15 construction designed for on-site construction in the form of a kit or pieces which can be assembled on-site. The present invention, among other materials, may be constructed of corrugated metal sheeting having a parabolic-like shaped dome 11 for added strenght at its top 11, front 13 and rear 15 surfaces having a base frame member 16 on its lower part within which the corrugated metal sheeting is mounted. Embodiments are described which can be used for aboveground or belowground installation and which may be skin-supported.
