    • An improved two-point temperature probe is provided comprising a housing, a pair of bores within the housing to each respectively receive a thermocouple element, an end cap on the device covering the bores and having openings therein whereby a portion of the thermocouple elements may pass therethrough, collar means on the thermocouple elements cooperating with the end cap to retain the elements within the device, and bias means within the bores to yieldably bias the collars on the thermocouple elements against the end cap on the device, the device being further provided with means to prevent rotation of the thermocouple elements within the bores, and detachable tips on the thermocouple elements whereby the tip may be removed from the remainder of the thermocouple element and replaced when necessary due to wear or other type of damage without the necessity of replacing the entire thermocouple element.

    • A thermocouple device comprising two low mass dissimilar metal elements each being of relatively short length and each having a relatively narrow cross section along their lengths. The elements are provided with pointed ends for engaging and penetrating the surface of an object to be measured for its temperature. The two metal elements are disposed together such that their pointed ends taper toward each other to form a single, unitary, pointed end. The two elements are separated by a relatively thin layer of heat resistant, insulating material, and extend into and are secured in an insulating refractory member.

    • A method of more accurately measuring the true surface temperature of metal alloy objects without contacting the same. The surfaces of the objects have unknown emissivities that change and that are less than unity. The method includes the step of providing objects having surfaces that radiate infrared energy. The radiated energy is measured at two wavelengths, and a first measurement is provided that is a function of the ratio of the energies at the two wavelengths. The radiated energy is also measured at a single, narrow band wavelength, and a second measurement is provided that is a function of the radiated energy. The two measurements are then electrically combined to provide measurements of radiated energy and thus temperature measurements that are or at least are closer to the true temperature than either of the first or second measurements.
