    • An improved power absorption device of the general Prony brake design is capable of either applying to a rotating shaft either a fixed force or a force proportional to its rotational speed or for measuring mechanical power transferred to a rotating shaft by a prime mover. A stator shaft aligned with the rotating shaft is sealed within a cylindrical drum which is coupled to the rotating shaft and rotated thereby. A hydraulic system actuates a plurality of pistons in radially outward directions so as to frictionally engage the inner surface of the rotating drum. The resulting heat build-up is transferred through the finned, high-heat transfer lateral walls of the drum to water in a tank in which the rotating drum is located. Brake lubrication is provided by a closed lubricant circulation system within the rotating drum capable of providing efficient, uniform lubrication of the brake surfaces. The drum is sealed to prevent the loss of lubricant therefrom as well as water contamination therein while the level of lubricant in the brake cell is easily checked by visual means. The closed lubricant circulation system protects the friction material from wear and lubricant glazing and permits the brake to operate at high temperatures without lubricant loss due to "cook off". Means are provided for continuously filtering the brake lubricant for removing "slough off" friction material therefrom.

    • The system measures horsepower at the drive wheels of a truck tractor under conditions which very closely simulate actual road conditions. For each set of drive wheels there are a driver roll and an idler roll mounted on a frame for rotatably supporting the drive wheels, and a dynamometer is connected to measure the power transmitted from the tractor drive wheels to the drive roll. A hydraulic cylinder and piston rod unit is mounted to the support frame and extends rearwardly. A flexible link connects the movable end of the hydraulic cylinder and piston rod unit to the fifth wheel on the tractor for forcing the tractor wheels against the driver roll while removing weight from the idler roll - thus transmitting the entire torque at the drive wheel to the driver roll while leaving full control of the applied load in the hands of the operator. The driver roll and idler roll for one set of drive wheels is mounted on a movable chassis for accommodating all wheel bases; and the idler rolls are independently movable relative to their associated driver rolls for controlling the distribution of traction between the driver and idler rolls. In a modification, the pulling angle of the flexible link may be set for further controlling the application of torque to the driven roll.

    • A grain cart includes an auger having a first lower section fixedly mounted to an inner portion of the cart and a second upper section pivotally mounted to an upper end of the first auger section and movable between a retracted, non-use position and an extended, use position. The auger's second section is folded inwardly and maintained in position within an upper portion of the grain cart by gravity when positioned in the retracted position. The second section of the auger is pivotally displaced outwardly to assume the extended, use position wherein the two auger sections are aligned and mechanically coupled for removal of grain from the cart, with the second auger section also maintained in this extended position by gravity. The first and second auger sections are coupled to a mounting plate so as to form an integral structure which is easily removed from and installed in the cart as a unit by means of a plurality of bolts coupling the mounting plate to a lateral wall of the cart. A partition attached to the lower end portion of the auger's second section in combination with slots positioned adjacent to where the first and second auger sections abut eliminates grain loss as the auger is extended to the use position for removal of grain from the cart.

    • The stand includes a rectangular base having a pair of parallel beams or rails. A pair of clamp fasteners are mounted to each end of the beams; and they may be adjusted longitudinally of the rails. Support wheels are mounted to each clamp fastener for vertical adjustment. At each end of the base, a pair of the clamp fasteners carries a vertical box frame between the rails. Each box frame telescopically receives and guides an adjustable vertical extension or slide which may be raised by a hydraulic ram. The clamps are mounted off vertical center on the box frames, so they may be reversed for further vertical adjustment. Other elements may be mounted to the base rails by the clamp fasteners.
