    • An installation for the surface treatment of workpieces has a housing with a treatment chamber. The workpieces are conveyed through the chamber by an apparatus which continuously advances the workpieces while simultaneously tumbling the same. The apparatus includes an elongated, generally horizontal cage-like receptacle which extends through the chamber and a motor for rotating the receptacle on its longitudinal axis to thereby tumble the workpieces. The receptacle has an end wall to either side of the chamber and the end walls are joined to one another by a tubular shell made up of a series of elongated components such as rods or wires. The elongated components, which are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the receptacle, are circumferentially spaced so that a medium for the surface treatment of workpieces being tumbled in the shell can penetrate the latter. The end walls of the receptacle can be pivoted so that the normals to the end walls make an acute angle with the longitudinal axis of the receptacle and this results in lengthwise movement of the elongated components as the receptacle rotates. Such lengthwise movement causes the workpieces to advance through the treatment chamber as the workpieces are tumbled. The elongated components are connected to one another, at least in the portion of the shell which is located in the chamber, in order to strengthen the shell and to allow the latter to confine flat workpieces.

    • Apparatus for transporting, agitating, rotating and treating discrete objects, such as metallic parts, has an endless band which is trained over two sets of rollers and forms a trough between the two sets of rollers. The band is driven by at least one set of the rollers and is tensioned at a level below the trough. The objects are admitted into one end of the trough and move up and down in response to movement of the band as well as in a direction toward the other end of the trough, either because the trough slopes downwardly toward the other end or under the action of a helix in the trough. The helix can form part of the band, or it can constitute a discrete part which is rotated in the trough. One or more impellers and/or nozzles are provided above the trough to spray solid or liquid treating agents onto the objects.

The end walls are rotatable in inclined carriers which cause them to act not unlike swash plates and to cause the components to reciprocate in response to rotation of the cage about its axis. The end portions of the components are tensionsed by springs which react against the end walls and bear against axially adjustable nuts at the free ends of the components at the outer sides of the end walls. The end walls have relatively large holes to ensure that the components are not flexed during reciprocation in response to rotation of the cage. Workpieces to be treated, e.g., by sprays of solid particles, are introduced through one of the end walls and advance toward the other end wall at a speed which is determined by the extent of reciprocatory movement of the components and the rotational speed of the cage.

    • Apparatus for deburring or other surface treatment of workpieces has a tubular housing with a set of axially parallel flexible, elastic or rigid rod- or wire-like components which define gaps and whose end portions are separately affixed to driven rotary end walls. The end walls wobble in synchronism with one another so as to move the components longitudinally while the components orbit about the axis of the receptacle. The workpieces which are admitted into one end of the receptacle are agitated and rotated as a result of rotation of the receptacle and move toward the other end of the receptacle due to reciprocation of components in parallelism with the axis of the receptacle. One or more nozzles admit jets of flames, solid, liquid and/or gaseous media which penetrate through the gaps between the components of the receptacle and treat the workpieces.
