摘要： An improved method for separating whole blood into components and collecting a desired blood component. The method allows a desired blood component to be subjected to centrifugal forces within a separator for prolonged periods of time, yielding a cleaner cut and higher yield of the desired blood component. Whole blood is drawn from a source and pumped into a separator, the undesired blood components are removed from the separator at rates so as to build up the desired blood component in the separator. The desired blood component is only removed after a predetermined amount of the desired blood component has built up in the separator. It is preferred that the desired blood component be buffy coat and that the method be used to perform photopheresis treatments. In another aspect, the invention is a method of performing a full photopheresis treatment to treat diseases in a reduced time, preferably less than about 70 minutes, and more preferably less than about 45 minutes.

摘要： A contaminant detector including a light source for emitting light of a wavelength with peak emission corresponding to that of "blue" light or to that of light of even lower wavelength. Light is emitted through an arrangement containing a liquid sample having a given contaminant, and a sensing arrangement on the other side of the liquid sample detects the amount of light passing through the liquid sample. The measured light is converted into a value indicative of the relative presence of the given contaminant in the liquid sample. It is contemplated that other types of light can be used, particularly if the color of the light is matched, or even approximately matched, with that portion of the liquid sample that is not to be measured (i.e. the "background" or "non-contaminant" portion of the liquid.

摘要： An apparatus for pumping fluid at a steady rate. A first drive chamber having a movable outer surface, and a second drive chamber having a movable outer surface are provided. The apparatus further includes a block having a plurality of internal passages including a first passage for receiving the fluid into the block and a second passage for discharging the fluid from the block at the steady rate. The block has first and second internal chambers which are in fluid connection with the first and second passages. The first internal chamber has a first flexible surface for mating with the movable outer surface of the first drive chamber, and the second internal chamber has a second flexible surface for mating with the movable outer surface of the second drive chamber. At least one actuator is provided for applying positive pressure to the first flexible surface while simultaneously applying negative pressure to the second flexible surface and for applying negative pressure to the first flexible surface while simultaneously applying positive pressure to the second flexible surface. The actuator is respectively coupled to the first and second flexible surfaces by the first and second drive chambers.
