    • A cover for a reel of welding wire comprises a sleeve having axially opposite ends extending across the outer peripheries of the flanges of the reel and having radially inwardly open circumferentially extending recesses interengaging with the flanges to releasably axially retain the sleeve on the reel and to seal the space between the flanges so as to protect welding wire wound about the hub of the reel between the flanges from exposure to air and moisture. Seals are provided between the recesses and reel flanges for the latter purpose. In accordance with another embodiment, the cover comprises two portions which snap-lock together to completely enclose the reel. The reel and cover are relatively rotatable and in accordance with another aspect of the invention the cover can remain on the reel during use and is provided with an integral or detachable nose which supports the wire during unwinding thereof from the reel.

    • In an engine welder of the type including an output alternator having a rotor driven about a central axis with an outwardly facing, cylindrical surface and a stator with a cylindrical surface generally matching said cylindrical surface of the rotor and containing in a number of inwardly opening, circumferentially spaced, axially extending winding slots, wherein the slots include a first group adapted to receive welding current windings and a second group adapted to receive auxiliary power circuit windings. The improvement in this construction involves modifying the first group of slots to include structural means for causing a substantial increase in the flux leakage in the first group of slots, as compared to the flux leakage between the second group of slots. In this manner, the welding output of the engine welder has a substantial internal reactance and the auxiliary power circuit has a reduced internal reactance, all in the same stator. This reduces the necessity for an external reactor in the welding circuit driven by the engine welder and improves the voltage regulation of the auxiliary power circuit.

    • Apparatus and method to reduce spatter and allow better semi-automatic welding in short circuiting arc welding of the type using a single D.C. power supply for causing a welding current to pass through a welding wire extending variable distances from a holder and between the welding wire and a workpiece at a molten metal pool on the workpiece. The welding current flows in response to an arc voltage while the welding wire is fed from the holder toward the workpiece whereby the welding wire is subjected to a succession of welding cycles each of which include an arcing condition during which the wire is spaced from the pool and a short circuit condition during which a molten metal ball formed on the end of the wire contacts the metal pool and then transfers from the wire to the workpiece by a necking action. In this type of welding operation, the invention involves the application of a preselected amount of energy into the wire during the arcing condition for each welding cycle, which preselected amount of energy slightly exceeds the known value of energy necessary to melt a given volume of metal to form a consistent molten metal ball onto the end of the wire. This constant energy is divided between the resistance heating of the wire extending from the wire holder and the anode heating caused by the arc during each arcing condition of a cycle. Consequently, constant energy is inputted to the end of the wire irrespective of changes in the amount of wire extension or stick-out.
