    • A surface mount connector including an insulating housing and pairs of an upper and lower pin contacts which comprising terminal pins piercing the housing and being in vertical alignment and partially in a bifurcated pattern, in each pair. Each pin contact has a lead 15A or 15B integral with its base portion 15A or 15B and solderable to a pad on a printed circuit board. The leads are included in a single plane intermediate two further planes in which the upper and lower terminal pins respectively, respectively extend, respectively. A bottom contact surface of each lead protrudes downwardly between stepped regions of the lead. The insulating housing is partially cut off at its lower corner under the leads so as to provide a cutout tightly engageable with a side edge of the printed circuit board, so that visual inspection and correcting of soldered leads of the connector is facilitated, while ensuring reliable soldering of the leads, and further reducing the size and height of the connector from the board.

    • Apparatus for making electrical harnesses including wires and electrical connectors, the apparatus comprising a wire feed path extending and substantially horizontally and axially of the apparatus; a connector attaching device comprising a cooperating assembling punch and die pair disposed on respective sides of the wire feed path, and a wire cutting blade located adjacent to the punch and die pair; a connector supplying device for supplying the connectors to the assembling die; a first chuck reciprocally movable along the wire feed path for pulling out the wires in its advancing movement for a distance corresponding to a desired length of the electrical harness; a second chuck for holding the supplied wires laterally at equal intervals, and guiding the same to the connector attaching device along the wire feed path, the second chuck reciprocally movable in a small range during which movement to align the top ends of the wires; an insulation covering stripping device mounted on the second chuck; whereby, upon operation of the apparatus, the wires supplied to the connector attaching device are pulled out by the first chuck to a desired length from the connector attaching position; then the insulation covering stripping device being operated to slit the insulation covering of each wire, and the connector attaching device being operated to cut the wires to a desired length, and attach the connector to the tail ends of the wires.

    • A multi-contact electrical connector for electrically connecting a plurality of wires to a printed circuit board. The electrical connector includes an open topped housing having a plurality of contact chambers, wire holding sections, and terminal receiving bores, with the terminal receiving bores intersecting lower portions of the contact chambers and extending in parallel to the wire holding sections. Each wire holding section includes a securing arrangement such that the wire placed therein is securely held, and each of the contact chambers accommodates a contact member having a pair of spaced pressing elements, with a space between the pressing elements being narrower than a diameter of a conductor in the wires so that the insulating cladding or cover of the wire is penetrated by side ridges of the pressing elements to allow the conductor of the wire to make an electrical contact with the contact member. The contact member also includes an arrangment which enables the terminal inserted in the terminal receiving bore to be detachably held so as to ensure an electrical connection therebetween.

    • An apparatus for manufacturing electrical harnesses, the apparatus comprising a wire feed path extending horizontally and axially of the apparatus, a connector attaching device located alongside the wire feed path. The attaching device includes a punch and a die to press the wires into the connectors, and a cutter located adjacent to the punch and die such that the cutter is operated independently of the punch and die. A wire measuring and feeding device is reciprocally movable along the wire feed path, with the wire measuring and feeding device including an intermittently movable chuck enabling the connected-attached wires to be pulled to a desired length. A connector selecting and supplying device enables the connectors having a desired number of poles to be selected from connectors and supplied onto the die. A wire selecting and supplying device includes a chuck for selecting the wires which correspond to the selected connectors and supplying the selected wires to the connector attaching device. The wire selecting and supplying device is adapted to hold the wires fed from reels, with the amount of movement and frequency of the reciprocal movements of the movable chuck being predetermined as desired. The operation of the cutter is effected only when the movable chuck is at rest, thereby ensuring that various types of harnesses are produced in which the number of poles of the connectors, the number and position thereof and the intervals thereof are determined as desired.
