    • A back support device for supporting a wearer's back during various activities is described. The back support device includes an inner belt, and outer substantially inelastic belt, and a semi-rigid abdominal plate positioned beneath the outer substantially inelastic belt. The back support device is designed to be positioned circumferentially about a wearer's waist or lower torso region, such that the abdominal plate overlies an abdominal region of the wearer, with the substantially inelastic belt securing the abdominal plate firmly in position thereon, in order to increase the intraabdominal pressure and thereby support the wearer's lower spine. The inner belt is desirably substantially elastic in order that it closely conforms to the wearer's body and assists in increasing the intraabdominal pressure. The back support device also desirably includes a lumbosacral pad, which can be positioned within a pocket located on a rear portion of the back support device, to thereby correspond with the wearer's lower spinal region and to provide effective contact between the inelastic belt of the device and the spine due to the spine's natural curvature in the lumbar region.

A first thumb strap has a fixed end attached to the palmar portion and a first distal end, while a second thumb strap has a fixed end attached to the palmar portion and a second distal end, and the first and second distal ends are joined together at a joined end. The first and second thumb straps define an opening therebetween for receiving the thumb of the user. The joined end has a joined end fastening surface for releasable fastening to the dorsal fastening surface, with the joined end fastening surface being relatively smaller in size than the dorsal fastening surface, and the joined end fastening surface is adjustably positionable on the dorsal fastening surface so as to provide greater or lesser relative tension on the first and second thumb straps around the thumb of the user.

    • A bubble detector system is provided which dynamically responds to changes in energy transmission efficiency. The output of a detector is coupled to a dynamic reference level circuit, which develops a reference level that changes slowly in a time-varying manner with changes in the energy level received by the detector. The output of the detector is also coupled to a bubble detector circuit which produces a detection signal that changes rapidly when gas is present between an energy source and the detector. The detection and reference levels are compared to detect the presence of gas in the flow of fluid between the energy source and the detector.

    • A hemodialysis system capable of operation in either a single needle mode or a double needle mode includes an arterial blood pump which is the sole blood pump in the system during the double needle mode. For single needle mode operation a venous blood pump is employed to return blood to the patient. A pump speed control adjusts the speed of the arterial pump in the double needle mode, and the speeds of both blood pumps in the single needle mode. A controller continuously operates the arterial pump in the double needle mode, and alternately activates the two pumps in the single needle mode. A module for modifying a commercially available double needle system for operation in either of the two modes is also described.

    • An extracorporeal, disposable, low-prime dialyzer coil for use in a variety of artificial kidney systems which includes a length of porous material supporting the tube of membrane material in a generally flattened and rolled up configuration. The length of porous material has an average thickness along its edge portions which is no greater than the average thickness along its mid-portion, and has an embossed configuration on one side while the other side is relatively smooth. The porous material is rigidized thermoplastic or thermosetting material, composed for instance of sintered granules or foamed open cells, with a majority of the pores or openings communicating with the surface to insure full dialysate flow against the membrane material. The porous support material is useful in a wide variety of coil designs, including coils adapted for operation with recirculating artificial kidney systems, with non-recirculating systems, or with systems combining recirculation with fresh dialysate addition.
