    • An improved non-woven support screen for mass transfer devices including a first set of parallel spaced longitudinally extending filaments having a predetermined thickness or diameter and a second set of parallel spaced filaments obliquely arranged relative to the first set of filaments and having a predetermined thickness or diameter approximately 1/2 that of the first set of filaments to provide improved control of membrane distention for minimizing the masking of the membrane surface by preventing excessive distention in one plane, to reduce the volume of body fluid layer in the membrane (low prime), and provide improved mass transfer efficiency while maintaining gentle mixing of the body fluid. Moreover, the velocity gradient of the exchange fluid is enhanced by the limited space provided for the exchange fluid channels to significantly improve the scrubbing action of the exchange fluid on the membrane surface. Advantageously, the larger diameter of the filaments of the first set provides low operating fluid pressure within the membrane channels by allowing selective distention of the membrane.

    • An extracorporeal, disposable, low-prime dialyzer coil for use in a variety of artificial kidney systems which includes a length of porous material supporting the tube of membrane material in a generally flattened and rolled up configuration. The length of porous material has an average thickness along its edge portions which is no greater than the average thickness along its mid-portion, and has an embossed configuration on one side while the other side is relatively smooth. The porous material is rigidized thermoplastic or thermosetting material, composed for instance of sintered granules or foamed open cells, with a majority of the pores or openings communicating with the surface to insure full dialysate flow against the membrane material. The porous support material is useful in a wide variety of coil designs, including coils adapted for operation with recirculating artificial kidney systems, with non-recirculating systems, or with systems combining recirculation with fresh dialysate addition.

    • A rigid, clear, transparent styrene casing for a dialyzer coil of the type useful in artificial kidney machines wherein the casing consists of an upper end cap and a lower end cap, each being generally cup-shaped and proportioned for mating engagement with each other at their rim portions and tapering slightly inwardly from their rim portions to their base portions. There is also provided an optional cylindrical extension member which may be positioned between the upper and lower end caps to provide an elongated casing for an elongated dialyzer coil. In either arrangement, the base portion of the lower end cap has an outwardly extending central flange adapted for engagement with a dialysis inflow opening of an artificial kidney machine, and the base portion of the upper end cap has a large central aperture and a plurality of smaller dialysis outflow apertures spaced in a circle around the large central aperture.

    • A haemodialysis unit suitable for use in an artificial kidney machine has a blood conduit which has a wall of semi-permeable material on each of closely spaced opposite sides and plastics material sheet outside and on each side of the conduit. The sheet on each side provides, with a wall of semi-permeable material on that side, walls of a passage for dialysing liquid. On each side of the conduit the sheet has parallel liquid flow-directing ribs which are directed towards and into contact with the wall of semi-permeable material. The ribs on one side of the conduit are at an angle to the ribs on the opposite side. The blood conduit may be in the form of a tube or tubes of semi-permeable material and this may be coiled together with a length of a novel form of plastics material sheet which has ribs on both sides, the ribs on one side of the sheet being at an angle to the ribs on the other side.
