    • In a magnetic head of perpendicular magnetization type having main and sub magnetic poles arranged at both sides of a recording medium, a nonmagnetic supporter holding a high permeability magnetic thin layer of the main magnetic pole is formed by a polycrystalline sintered body substantially composed of titanium carbide and alumina. This polycrystalline sintered product well matches with a recording medium having a cobalt-chromium alloy layer so that the recording medium does not wear for a long time of use, and therefore, so that the contact surface of the main magnetic pole is hardly damaged. The same sintered body may also be used for the sub magnetic pole arranged to be in contact with the recording medium. Some structural improvements are also provided so that undesirable influence due to an adhesive layer adjacent to the magnetic thin layer is removed. One or more additional thin layers may be provided for reducing crosstalk between adjacent tracks. A magnetically shielding block is provided to prevent undesirable influence caused by an external magnetic field.

    • A shredder comprises a cutter unit including a pair of rotary cutters for shredding a material therebetween while the rotary cutters are rotating in a normal direction, a reversible motor for rotating the rotary cutters through a speed reducer, and a switch unit for selectively causing the motor to rotate the rotary cutter in the normal direction or reversing the motor to rotate the rotary cutters in a reverse direction to remove the material from the rotary cutters when the material is jammed in the rotary cutters. An electrical control circuit is responsive to actuation of the switch unit for enabling the motor to produce a larger torque while rotating in the reverse direction than the torque produced while rotating in the normal direction, thereby reliably releasing the rotary cutters from biting engagement with the material when jammed. The switch unit has means for generating a time delay while switching between rotation of the motor in the normal direction and rotation of the motor in the reverse direction, so that the motor and the speed reducer are protected against an undue load when starting to rotate in the reverse direction.

    • A plurality of transducers is arranged successively on a common impedance matching layer of a resilient material. Each transducer comprises an elongated piezoelectric element having a width expansion vibrational mode, a pair of first and second electrodes attached to opposite surfaces of the element across its thickness and an elongated block of an impedance matching material disposed between the second electrode and the common impedance matching layer. The common impedance matching layer is bent to take the shape of an arch to conform to the surface of a frame structure which is convexed in the direction of propagation of ultrasonic energy. The piezoelectric elements are secured to the frame so that they bridge the parallel side members of the frame. The piezoelectric members are divided into a plurality of subgroups, each composed of successively arranged elements. The piezoelectric elements of a given subgroup are selected and energized during each clock interval for transmission of focused ultrasonic energy. The subgroup to be selected is shifted linearly to the next by at least one element in response to successive clock pulses. Becuase of the convex shape of the array, the transmitted energy is successively angulated to provide arc scan.

    • In a bandpass filter having five or more resonator stages, a sub transmission line is coupled to the main transmission line at the first and fourth resonators. The first to fourth resonators provide peak attenuation points at both sides of the center frequency in the attenuation curve, while the remaining resonators following the fourth resonator further sharpen the attenuation characteristics of the bandpass filter. The main and sub transmission lines may be formed by striplines on a printed circuit board, while the sub transmission line can be capacity coupled to the main transmission line. Coupling capacitances are freely set by setting the length of each gap between adjacent striplines to a desired value. Thus, the peak attenuation points can be accurately controlled to provide a bandpass filter having superior characteristics.
