    • A system for identifying engines in a mixed train of standard four-, six-, and eight-axle railway cars and engines while coupled and in motion. First, second, third, and fourth axle detectors are arranged along the line of movement of the train. The first and fourth axle detectors are spaced from 9 feet 4 inches to 11 feet apart, with adjacent ones being less than 4 feet 6 inches apart, for railway vehicles having axles spaced according to current, standard American railway practice. For other axle spacings, the detector spacings may differ. There is a counter for each of the first, third, and fourth detectors with axle determination logic enabling each to start with a one count when actuated by the first axle of each car or engine and to count up to the total number of axles per vehicle and reset to zero. Two overriding and overlapping logics are provided to identify engines, one being effective on all four-axle engines and some six- and eight-axle engines, the other being effective on all six- and eight-axle engines not identified by the first. An engine identifying signal is activated when an engine is detected.

    • Method and apparatus for correcting synchronization error in a system for synchronizing a readout signal with some unique axle count condition in a train of standard railway vehicles coupled and in motion. Axle movement are detected at four locations identified as A, B, C and D in that order, in the direction of movement of the train, locations A and D being between 9 feet 4 inches and 11 feet apart for the axle spacings employed on standard American railway vehicles. Other A to D spacings may be used where axle spacings differ from current American practice. Axle movements are counted at A and D locations and the system remains in synchronism as long as the first axle of each vehicle is counted starting with a one-count regardless of the number of axles in the previous vehicle. If synchronized, when axles pass the locations in the proximate CDAB sequence, axle counts at A and D will have the following unique combinations: A 3, D 2 for four-axle vehicles; A 4, D 3 for six-axle vehicles; A 5, D 4 for eight-axle vehicles; and A 1, D 0 for uncoupled and certain long-coupled vehicles. If out of synchronism, the system is resynchronized according to the present invention by detecting the unique CDAB sequence and repeatedly, if necessary, setting the A and D counts to one of the above unique combinations until a vehicle identified by such combination moves past the detector locations.     • A system for generating a read-out signal which is synchronized with movement of a specific car portion such as a selected axle of each vehicle in a train past a selected location, for a mixed train of standard four-, six- and eight-axle railway cars and engines while coupled and in motion. The ''''selected location'''' has initial and final axle detectors spaced no less than 9 feet 4 inches and no more than 11 feet apart along the railroad track, for railway vehicles having axle spacings according to standard American practice. The detector spacings will differ for other axle spacings. Each detector has a counter for counting the number of axles on each vehicle and re-setting to zero after actuation by the last axle. The ''''selected axle'''' may be the last one on the vehicle where the read-out signal is used for triggering weight print-out of the vehicle. For any other information about the vehicle such as car style, type of load, shape, color, identification number, etc., the read-out signal may be generated when the counters are programmed for reset; or when the initial counter resets; or when the final counter resets; or in response to any other unique condition of the counters which occurs only once each time a vehicle moves past the axle detectors.

    • Method and apparatus for detecting synchronism error in a system which activates a readout signal for each vehicle in a train having a mixture of standard four-, six- and eight-axle cars and engines while coupled and in motion. Four axle detectors identified A, B, C and D are arranged in that order along the line of movement of the train. With the A and D detectors spaced 9 feet 4 inches to 11 feet apart, and the B and C detectors approximately evenly spaced between them, they will be actuated in a unique CDAB sequence once per standard, American four-, sixor eight-axle railway vehicle. A synchronism error signal will be activated unless one of four specific combinations of A and D axle detector actuations have occurred when the unique, CDAB sequence occurs.

    • A low-profile platform scale has a base with a pair of upstanding portions at the central part of the front and rear margins of the base. Each upstanding portion, as a mounting post, has at an upper elevation a vertical flat surface facing one end of the scale and at a lower elevation a vertical flat surface facing the other end of the scale. The upper flat surfaces of the two upstanding portions are at one transverse vertical plane while the lower flat surfaces are at another transverse vertical plane. A lower primary U-shaped lever and an upper secondary Ushaped lever are pivotally mounted by flexure plates on these vertical surfaces of the upstanding portions of the base with the pairs of lever arms of the levers extending in opposite directions to the corner portions of the scale. The primary lever has an intermediate arm extending in the opposite direction to the pair of lever arms of that lever. The secondary lever has an extension in the opposite direction to its pair of lever arms and the extension is above the intermediate arm of the primary lever. That extension is connected by a flexible cable to the intermediate arm of the primary lever. The distal end portion of the intermediate arm is connected by a flexible cable to a load cell mounted on the base. The platform of the scale is spaced above the secondary lever and has at each of its corner portions a downwardly extended leg from which extends horizontally a foot. Two of the feet extend below the distal portions of the lever arms of the primary lever and the other two feet extend below the distal end portions of the lever arms of the secondary lever. These feet are connected to the pairs of lever arms of the two levers by flexible cables.
