    • A method and apparatus for controlling the travel speed of automatic welding machines uses a rotatable member which is engaged with the workpiece as the workpiece is moved relative to the welding head. The rotatable member advantageously includes one or more apertures on one side of which light is directed and the opposite side of which light pulses are received during rotation of the member and these pulses are used as an indication of the speed of the welding machine. In the preferred apparatus a separate frictional member is frictionally engaged with the workpiece and moved by the movement of the workpiece relative to the welding head and through suitable gearing drives the rotatable member having the aperture. Light is transmitted to one side of the rotatable member preferably from a light source through optical fibers and is picked up on the opposite side by similar optical fiber elements which transmit the pulse signals to a sensor for the purpose of giving a digital or other reading in respect to the speed involved.

    • In a shaft seal having a radial plane seal ring gap and comprising a seal ring rotating with a shaft, and a non-rotating seal ring mounted on a housing of the seal through an element which is elastically yielding in every direction and serves as a packing at the same time, the sealing fluid flows into the sealing gap through supply bores and through associated distributing pockets which are provided in the non-rotating seal ring and/or at the outer or inner circumference of the rotating seal ring. Sensors for measuring the sealing gap are provided in the non-rotating seal ring on the gap side. By means of the measured values, electromagnets disposed in the seal housing to face each other and cooperating with opposite magnetizable bodies provided in the non-rotating seal ring, are electronically controlled to maintain a predetermined constant small width of the seal gap. The electromagnets are disposed axially at both sides of a shoulder portion of the non-rotating seal ring to be effective in opposite directions, against each other.

    • A bus frame including a floor frame and a roof frame, the roof frame including a three-dimensional longitudinally continuous framework occupying at least a portion of the total roof frame width. The three-dimensional framework fits along the corners of the bus formed where the roof and side walls of the bus meet. The outer contour of the framework has the form of a triangular prism, one face of the prism coinciding with the bus roof, and another face coinciding with a bus side wall. The prism-shaped framework is defined in part by a series of triangular transverse members, each member being in a plane normal to the longitudinal centerline of the bus. The diagonally-oriented frame members, which face the interior of the bus, carry retaining elements for holding trim panels.
