    • In an image area measuring apparatus of the type wherein an image bearing surface of a lithographic printing plate is photographed with a television camera to produce an image signal, the image signal is converted into a digital signal to obtain a measured value and an image area of each one of a plurality of zones of the image bearing surface is determined by an arithmetic operation utilizing the measured value, the image signal is judged by the step of judging the image signal by taking the percentage of dot ratio of a predetermined constant value as a 100% dot ratio when the image bearing surface does not contain a portion corresponding to 100% dot ratio. Further the image signal is proofed by a method including the steps of obtaining a proof value corresponding to the measured value from a compensation table utilizing logarithmic functions by using a proof plate having a uniform light reflective index, determining a proof value for the measured value of the lithographic printing plate from the proof table, determining a difference between the proof value and the compensation value, and determining the image area from the difference.

    • A unit-to-unit register adjusting apparatus and method for multicolor printing presses includes a plate cylinder, a first plate clamping device on the leading side and a second plate clamping device on the trailing side for jointly clamping a plate on the plate cylinder. Each of the first and second plate clamping devices is disposed in an axial groove in the plate cylinder. The first plate clamping device is adjustably angularly movable by an adjustment bolt in the circumferential direction of the plate cylinder. The second plate clamping device is positionally adjustable by an adjustment bolt in the axial direction of the plate cylinder. By adjusting the first and second plate clamping devices in position on the plate cylinder, the plate can be positionally adjusted circumferentially and axially of the plate cylinder for complete registry with another plate on another plate cylinder. The adjustment bolts have graduations for allowing the operator to know an angular position thereof reliably through numerical confirmation.

    • An improved chopper device for use in a folder for folding a signature which has been subjected to parallel folding at a parallel folding device and then conveyed by means of a conveying belt, in a direction perpendicular to the parallel folding direction. The chopper device is provided with an elongated opening having a mouthpiece below the conveying path therefor. An upwardly and downwardly movable chopper blade lowers when the signature is stopper at a predetermined position and forces the signature into the opening. A pair of rollers is provided below the opening in order to grip the signature forced into the opening by the chopper blade nd deliver it to a delivery conveyor. Brushes are provided on both sides of the opening thereabove so as to slidably hold both sides of the signature when the signature is lowered by the rollers through the opening. Such an arrangement permits both side edges of the signature which has been released from the condition where it is held by the conveying belt to enter into the opening while sliding on the brushes.

    • In a printing press including an intaglio cylinder, an impression cylinder and a blanket cylinder, for the purpose of throwing on and off these cylinders there is provided a control apparatus comprising a first detection switch which produces a selection signal when a rotating radial projection passes by, and a plurality of second detection switches which generate timing signals when passing by a plurality of radially spaced projections. The selection signal is used to select either one of the second selection switches, and the timing signal generated by a selected second detection switch is used to throw on and off the cylinders.According to this invention it is not necessary to use a number of expensive multistage preset counters which are liable to misoperate due to noise.
