    • A hydrodynamic treatment device comprises a vessel (2) within which is disposed an inner partition (24). The inner partition (24) divides the interior of the vessel (2) into outer and inner regions (22, 28). Flow enters the vessel (2) through a tangentially oriented inlet (14) and establishes a complex circulating flow within the vessel (2). Settleable solids migrate to the bottom of the vessel (2) and are deposited in a sump (20) through a solids outlet opening (18). Flow enters the inner region (28) through apertures (34) in the inner partition (24), and is discharged through an outlet duct (8). The inner region (28) is closed at its lower end by a frusto-conical, downwardly diverging lower wall (30) which projects outwardly from a central cylindrical wall (26).

    • A method of configuring a vortex flow control device 2 comprising a vortex chamber 4, an inlet 6 and an outlet 8 arranged at one end of the vortex chamber 4, wherein the method comprises the steps of: setting a target maximum flow rate FT-MAX through the outlet 8 for a predetermined pressure PT-MAX at the inlet; setting a target vortex initiation flow rate FT-VI through the outlet 8 at which vortex flow within the vortex chamber 4 initiates; determining the actual maximum flow rate FA-MAX through the outlet 8 for the predetermined pressure PT-MAX at the inlet 6; determining the actual vortex initiation flow rate FA-VI through the outlet 8; determining an error parameter E based on at least one of the actual maximum flow rate FA-MAX and the actual vortex initiation flow rate FA-VI and at least one of the target maximum flow rate FT-MAX and the target vortex initiation flow rate FT-VI, comparing the error parameter E against a target condition CT; and, if the error parameter E fails to satisfy the target condition CT, modifying at least one characteristic of the vortex flow control device 2 so as to vary at least one of the actual maximum flow rate FA-MAX and the actual vortex initiation flow rate FA-VI so that the modified vortex flow control configuration produces a hydraulic response that more closely satisfies the target condition CT.

    • A vortex valve (40) includes a housing defining a votex chamber(44), the housing having an inlet (46) through which liquid may enter the vortex chamber (44)in a manner to promote swirl within the vortex chamber (44) and an outlet (30) at one axial end of the vortex chamber (44). A wall of the housing is provided with an opening which is normally closed by a closure, this closure (6) being operable between the closed position and an open position in which livid may enter the vortex chamber (44) by-passing the inlet (46). The vortex valve is free from a spring device capable of urging the closure (6) from the open position to the close position. The vortex valve (40) may be provided at the outlet of a gully and is useful in enabling a blockage, which may occur at the inlet (46) of the vortex valve (40), to be by-passed, thereby draining any accumulated liquid in the gully. The blockage may then be removed when the gully is relatively dry.
