    • A wind powered device on a support structure is provided with a drive shaft mounted for rotation about its axis on the support structure and is coupled to an electric generator connected to a utility power grid.A rotor is mounted on the support structure and is adapted to drive the shaft, hence the electric generator. The rotor has at least one rotor blade. The rotor is mounted to drive the shaft and also for limited relative rotational movement with respect to the drive shaft about the axis of the drive shaft as the wind velocity driving the rotor changes. The coupling between the shaft and rotor responds to increases and decreases in rotor torque so that as imbalances between shaft torque and rotor torque arise, the rotor tends to run ahead of or behind the shaft. That causes rotation of the rotor relative to the drive shaft and the coupling means sense that change and automatically increase or decrease blade pitch via the automatically responsive mechanical coupling means to tend to bring shaft torque and rotor torque back into balance. Desirably the shaft is governed by a speed regulator, such as a generator connected to a utility power grid, so that it will rotate up to a predetermined speed or speeds beyond which shaft torque tends to increase sharply, so that if the speed of rotation of the rotor increases to a point at which it tends to exceed maximum permitted shaft torque, the blades are automatically increased in pitch which then decreases rotor speed, hence rotor torque.Several embodiments for automatically mechanically adjusting blade pitch in response to changes in rotor torque and imbalances in rotor and shaft torque are disclosed.

    • A head gasket assembly particularly for an internal combustion engine. The gasket assembly has at least one combustion opening and a plurality of other apertures, and comprises at least a pair of expansive gasketing layers secured to each other. A sealing pattern of elastomer or metal or the like is provided between the layers so that they envelope the sealing pattern. The sealing pattern desirably surrounds at least one of the opening and the apertures for enhancing the sealing effect of the gasket assembly in the zone of the sealing pattern, thereby to protect the sealing pattern from direct contact with the engine head and block. The sealing pattern is adhered to one of the layers, and the layers are adhered to each other by adhesive under pressure in a zone closely surrounding the sealing pattern to restrict lateral movement of the sealing pattern and to compress and densify at least one of the layers in the zones overlying the sealing pattern to enhance the sealing characteristics of the gasket assembly.

    • A diesel head gasket assembly comprising a heat sensitive, multilayer main body defining water and oil apertures and combustion openings and fire rings each comprising an annulus supported in the combustion openings by individual spaced U-shaped tabs.     • An improved heat gasket assembly for sealing the block and head of an internal combustion engine where the head mounts a precombustion chamber, and method of making that gasket assembly. The gasket assembly comprises a main gasket body and an armored fire ring mounted at the combustion openings. The fire ring provides a precombustion tab underlying the precombustion chamber, against which sealing occurs. To enhance that seal, spanner elements are positioned between the wire ring and the lower leg of the armor of the fire ring in the zones in which the periphery of the precombustion chamber overlie the wire ring. When the gasket assembly is compressed between the block and the head (and precombustion chamber) the spanner elements induce a more effective and consistent seal between the fire ring, the head, and the precombustion chamber regardless of whether the precombustion chamber is flush with, projects from, or is recessed with respect to, the head.

    • A multilayer engine gasket is provided for resisting scoring, scratching and fretting corrosion. The gasket includes a metal core or substrate, an intermediate phosphate layer and an exterior layer of anti-fretting material. The metal core is preferably formed of steel and is constructed and arranged to be mounted between an engine head and block of an internal combustion engine, such as a diesel engine. A pair of piston-size apertures and a plurality of oil and water passageways are defined in the metal core. The intermediate phosphate layer enhances the ability of the anti-fretting material to adhere to the gasket and provides and assists in resisting anti-fretting corrosion. The exterior layer of anti-fretting material is formulated from a ratio of from about 65 per cent to about 35 per cent polytetrafluoroethylene to a ratio from about 35 per cent to about 65 per cent molybdenum disulfide by weight. A separately screened-on silicone bead may optionally border the peripheral edges of the metal core so as to provide a peripheral seal.

    • End dam assemblies for sealing a gap between adjacent roadway or deck slabs comprise a series of elongate elastomeric end dam sections which are assembled in end-to-end array. The end dam sections are provided with layers of porous material which confront and engage each other when adjoining end dam sections are secured together. The layers of porous material enhance securance of the end dam sections to each other by providing an auxiliary material on each end dam section which is more easily bonded to the end dam sections and to each other than are the adjoining end dam sections directly to each other.     • A method of making a gasket assembly of enhanced sealing characteristics comprising the steps of providing a gasket body having an expansive metallic core and at least one compressible fiber-elastomer facing layer and defining at least one clear-through opening, providing a silk screen through which a fluid silicone sealant material is adapted to be squeezed in a desired sealing pattern onto the gasket body, squeezing through the silk screen a fluid, moisture-carbon dioxide curable, silicone sealant material which is curable in the presence of high humidity and carbon dioxide levels into a desired sealing pattern onto the facing layer without intervening barrier coats, preheating the gasket body to a temperature of from about 170.degree. F. to about 185.degree. F. for about 30 to 60 seconds without added moisture, positioning the patterned gasket body in a chamber, and exposing the gasket body in the chamber to a conditioned atmosphere of humidity of at least about 85% relative humidity and of a carbon dioxide volume percent of from about 9 to about 13%, for from about 5 to about 8 minutes, thereby to cure the silicone sealant material to form an elastomeric silicone sealing pattern on the gasket body.
