    • A method of generating an output device control signal having portions representing the content of pixels of an image including at least two types of image content, in which data defining the content of each pixel of the image at a lower, first resolution and a higher, second resolution are passed respectively through a pair of processing paths, one corresponding to each image content type. A binary control signal is generated from the first resolution data in the first path by applying a stochastic screen. The binary control signal resulting from the stochastic screen is adapted to conform with the data at the second resolution, and the output device control signal is generated by combining data from the two processing paths.

    • Apparatus for use in calibrating a display system comprising digital-to-analogue converters (D.A.C) (11,12,13) for converting a digital colour control signal to analogue colour component signals which are suitable for controlling an electronic display. An analogue signal modifier modifies the signals from the D.A.C. The apparatus also comprises a switch (10) for connecting between the D.A.C. and the analogue signal modifier. The switch is operable in a first mode (52,54) to pass signals from the D.A.C. (11,12,13) directly to the analogue signal modifier or in a second mode (53) to pass analogue calibration colour component signals to the analogue signal modifier such that the appearance of the signals from the D.A.C. and the calibration signals can be visually compared on a screen (17) to determine whether any reproduction errors are in the D.A.C. (11,12,13) or in the signal modifier.

    • Apparatus for creating or modifying an electronically represented image comprising a display (30); a store (11) for storing arrays of data values defining electronic brushes; an input device (5) to enable an operator to control movement of a previously defined brush on the display; and a processor (1) responsive to the input device (5) to move an electronic brush selected from the store across the displays (30) so as to create or modify an electronically represented image. The processor (1) is also adapted to generate and store a representation of the profile of an electronic brush for use subsequently to create or modify electronically an image, in which a previously defined brush is used to define an array of pixels at a first resolution having a shape corresponding to the new brush, the previously defined brush comprising an array of pixels for each of which a value is stored. The processor (1) stores a value for each pixel of the new array computed from the values of the or each pixel of the previously defined brush which passes through the new array pixel during movement of the previously defined brush.

    • A method and apparatus for modifying an image represented by digital data defining the content of one or more pluralities of cells constituting one or more color separations is described. The digital data indicates for each cell whether the respective color is "present" or "absent". The apparatus comprises scanning means (15,16) for electronically scanning along a plurality of scan lines with a mask of preselected dimensions; the respective plurality of digital data corresponding to a region including a boundary for one or more of the color separations. Programmable logic determines at each position of the mask whether the portion of the color separation within the mask includes at least one cell the content of which indicates color "present"; and modifies the digital data at another, predetermined position within the mask to change the content of the respective cell or cells of the color separation to represent color "present" or color "absent" when color "present" is detected within the mask. The boundary is thus "gripped" either positively or negatively.

    • An exposure system and method comprising a radiation generator (15'); and a modulator (4) which comprises a device for controlling the transmission of radiation passing through the modulator in accordance with an applied control function, the response characteristic of the modulator to the control function exhibiting a maximum or minimum and onto which radiation from the generator is incident. A microprocessor (19) controls the transmission condition of the modulator (4), and is responsive to predetermined control signals during an exposing stage and, during a compensation stage prior to the exposing stage, generates a test control function having a DC component and a cyclically varying component for application to the modulator. A photodiode (17) monitors radiation transmitted through the modulator, and a phase detector (18) detects the phase relationship between the cyclical component of the transmitted radiation and the cyclically varying component of the test control function and determines the position of the DC component of the test control function along the response characteristic of the modulator. The microprocessor (19) determines a correction function for application to the modulator (4) to compensate for any change in the response characteristic.

    • To produce a plurality of parallel light beams from a single input beam, the input beam is incident on a partially transmissive face of a triangular prism, the other two faces of which are silvered. The input beam strikes the partially-transmissive face at such a position and at such an angle of incidence that it gives rise to only two parallel emitted beams, part of the emitted light arising from internal reflections at both silvered faces. A number of such prisms may be arranged in series so that the n.sup.th prism receives 2.sup.n-1 beams and emits only 2.sup.n parallel output beams. The partially-transmissive face or faces may be coated to give rise to output beams of substantially equal intensity. In one form, each beam entering each prism has equal S- and P-polarization components.
