    • The subject invention is characterized by a mechanism for moving the tilt plate (45) laterally of the guide posts (38) to a loading position outside the operating area within the assembly so that the attachment surface faces sufficiently upwardly to allow a cope (36) and drag (34) defining a mold to rest thereon under the force of gravity. A plurality of crank arms (48) are fixed to and extend upwardly from one lateral edge of the tilt plate (45) to a distal end. A pair of hydraulic cylinders (51) are disposed above the movable platen (43) with a first connection (52) to the distal ends of the crank arms (48) and a second connection (53) to the movable platen (43) for rotating the crank arms (48) to thereby rotate the tilt plate (45) about a tilt axis (50) between an operating position within the assembly and the loading position outside the assembly and facing upwardly. A support ledge, defined by a plurality of removable stakes (46), extends upwardly from the attachment surface in the loading position for receiving and holding a mold against the force of gravity in the loading position while the mold is secured to the tilt plate (45) by cope clamps (47).

    • Scrap metal chips, which may be oily, wet and dirty and which may be of varying lengths and widths, twisted, curled and cracked, resulting from machining metal articles, are cleaned and dried by passing them sequentially through a washer cylinder, a rinse cylinder and a dryer cylinder. A thread formed of a plate-like metal strip is secured within the interior surface of each cylinder to provide a deep, spiral trough within each cylinder. Each cylinder is rotated so that the chips are moved, in a tumbling motion, along the troughs due to the auger-like thread, from one end to the opposite end. A hot, aqueous washing solution is flowed through the washer cylinder in a direction opposite to the movement of the chips. Similarly, a hot rinse water is flowed through the rinse cylinder in a direction opposite to the movement of the chips therethrough. Hot air is flowed through the dryer cylinder along its central axis and then, radially outwardly of its axis, for impinging upon and drying the chips moved along the dryer cylinder.

    • A sand mold forming machine has a cope frame aligned above a drag frame with a pattern arranged between, and within, the frames. A sand filling is positioned in each of the frames. The sand fillings are compacted by squeeze plates overlaying the open, upper and lower ends of the cope and drag respectively. The squeeze plates are moved towards each other to compress the sand within the frames and against the pattern. Each of the squeeze plates is made of numerous, separate sections that are mounted upon a movable platten. The sections, of each plate, may move together as a group by moving the plattens or, the sections may be individually moved, relative to the plattens. Thus, pre-selected area of the sand fillings may be compacted more or less, as desired, than adjacent areas by separately moving opposing sections relative to the overall squeezing movements of the squeeze plate.

    • Worn interior wall surfaces of a sand casting flask cope or drag frame are resurfaced by covering the surfaces with thin, metal liner plates. The liner plates are bolted to the flask walls by bolts that extend through bolt holes in the liner plates and walls. The bolt holes through the plates are provided with deep countersinks for receiving the bolt heads and spacing the bolt heads beneath the exposed inner faces of the plates. Molten weld material is applied in such spaces for welding the bolts to the plates. A thin, hard coating of metal, such as chrome plating, is applied over the liner plate inner face and exposed weld material at the countersinks. Thereafter, the liner plate is removably fastened upon the inner surfaces of the flask frame by extending the bolts through the bolt holes in the frame wall and securing them in place with suitable nuts.

    • A mold within which molten metal is sand cast, is provided with strategically located chill plates which shape and rapidly cool the molten metal at predetermined locations for hardening those locations relative to the hardness of the remainder of the casting. The mold is formed of a cope and drag frame type flask within which sand is compacted to form the sand cavity. Plates are arranged transversely of the casting cavity and are secured to portions of the flask frame for dissipating heat through the plates and out through the frame. The plates are fixed to portions of the flask and are arranged in opposing pairs which are aligned, coplanar, in abutting relationship. Each plate of each pair is provided with a notch, aligned with its opposite plate, for encircling the portion of the casting to be chill hardened. The pattern used for forming the cavity extends through the aligned notches and between the plates to form the composite sand and metal plate casting surface in the cavity.

    • A relatively hard sand cake, containing a metal casting cavity, is formed in a flask comprising cope and drag frame sections by filling and compacting sand in the drag against the drag half of a cavity-forming pattern, then arranging the drag with the cavity opening upwards, applying the cope upon the drag and filling and compacting sand in the cope against the cope half of the cavity-forming pattern. The sand-filled cope is lifted from the drag for removal of the pattern and is re-applied to form the casting cavity in the sand cake. Next, selected wall corner joints of both the cope and the drag frames are separated and opened to laterally expand the walls of the frames away from the sand cake surfaces. This releases the sand cake from the cope and drag so that it may be removed from the flask for later casting molten metal in its casting cavity. At least two of the corners of each of the cope and drag frames include a separate corner piece against which the adjacent ends of the frame walls are abutted. A releasable fastening mechanism secures the corner pieces to their adjacent frame walls and may be selectively operated to separate the corner pieces from their adjacent walls for opening the wall corner joints.

    • A blow head or gassing head of an automatic core machine, which produces sand casting cores in a core box is formed of a downwardly opening box-like frame having a bottom closure plate. The heads may be alternatively used to respectively deposit a sand and binder material or to flow gas into a sand-filled core box cavity positioned beneath the head. The closure plates are provided with openings through which either the sand-binder material may drop from the blow head frame into the core box cavity or through which gas may flow from the gassing head frame into the cavity. The plate is loosely positioned beneath the frame and is clamped tightly upwardly against the bottom peripheral edge of the head by a spaced pair of elongated, rigid rails which engage and support the opposite side edges of the plate. A rail holding a clamping mechanism selectively moves the rails upwardly for clamping the plate against the frame and downwardly to free the plate relative to the frame. The rails are lowered when the openings in the plates become partially or fully obstructed or when different opening patterns are required so that the plate may be slid horizontally from beneath the frame and a substitute plate may be slid upon the rails beneath the frame and then clamped upwardly against the frame edges.
