    • Instructional apparatus for use in gaining experience in underwater welding having submerged welding facilities in a water container provided with a below-water level viewing window and a pair of rubber gloves secured to the container wall below water level. The water includes a small quantity of acid which reacts with and renders non-obscuring suspended opaque particulate unavoidably generated during welding. Putting on and taking off the gloves is facilitated by one of several techniques for temporarily relieving the hydraulic head on the gloves. Welding is carried out on a workpiece clamped to a support readily adjustable to a desired submerged position.

    • An hydraulically powered multiplex pump having at least three pumping units, each operable in a cycle including suction, precompression and discharge phases, with the cycles being out of phase with one another, whereby simultaneous performance of these functions results in a substantially constant pressure and flow of both the pumped fluid and the power fluid. Separate power and cycle control circuits, which may employ different fluids, are provided. Control valve assemblies, each including two sleeve valves communicating with a common chamber, are operated by the control circuit fluid to condition power circuit flow for the various phases of the pumping cycle. The power end of the pumping units includes power cylinders which may be fluid interconnected at their rod ends so that operations in each power cylinder affect functions in the other chambers, and provision is made for automatic correction of errors in stroke length.

    • A plug for insertion into a socket of the type having a diskshaped base member serving as a ground connection, such base member being formed with a central opening through which projects an electrically separate spring-loaded pin contact. The invention plug incorporates a ''''floating'''' ground plate of annular configuration designed for engagement with the socket base member, and a spring-biased axial conductor in alignment with the pin contact of the socket. A feature of the plug design is that the necessity for screwing the plug into the socket is eliminated through the use of a quick-connect-disconnect lever which is manually actuatable through a small angle to cause the radial extension of a deformable O-ring, thereby securing the plug in the socket after it has been linearly inserted thereinto. This precludes the possibility of abrading small metal particles from the respective contact surfaces, as may occur in conventional designs when engagement therebetween is brought about by relative rotational movement of plug and socket.
