    • A positive displacement reciprocating pump for conveying a liquid or gaseous fluid is disclosed and which comprises a fluid enclosure having a movable piston means mounted therein which sealably divides the enclosure into a pumping chamber on one side and an actuating chamber on the other side. The piston means may comprise either a slideable piston or a flexible diaphragm. An inlet valve and a separate outlet valve are each connected to the pumping chamber, and a control system is provided for intermittently supplying a pressurized working fluid to the actuating chamber so as to intermittently move the piston means in the discharge direction, with the piston means being moved in the opposite or suction direction by either the pressure of the fluid being conveyed, or a suitable spring. The control system for advancing the piston means in the discharge direction includes a source of pressurized working fluid, a working fluid line extending between the source and the actuating chamber, and a valve operatively connected to the working fluid line for intermittently opening the line to a discharge tank or the like to release the pressure therein.

    • A yarn handling apparatus is disclosed for a textile yarn winding machine of the type having a plurality of side by side winding positions extending along the length of the machine. A separate yarn handling apparatus is associated with each winding position, and each handling apparatus comprises an assembly which includes yarn catching means, yarn severing means, and yarn suction means for withdrawing the severed yarn end. The assembly is mounted for movement along a predetermined path of travel between a first end position located on the upstream side of the spindle and where the yarn catching means is adapted to engage the running yarn as it moves in its predetermined yarn traverse stroke, and a second end position located on the opposite side of the winding spindle and where the running yarn is adapted to be engaged by a yarn catching and severing notch on the associated empty bobbin tube. An embodiment is also disclosed wherein the winding machine includes a draw roll system, and there is further provided a movable yarn suction means for threading the advancing yarn about the draw roll system so that the yarn is helically disposed about groups of the draw rolls.

    • A yarn false twisting apparatus is disclosed which comprises a pair of rotating circular discs having cooperating friction surfaces for engaging a running yarn at a twisting zone. The drive system for the discs includes a drive component which includes a drive whorl and a coaxial drive pulley, and which is adapted to engage two separate drive belts. The drive component includes a unitary tubular drive member, a central shaft extending through and fixed to the drive member, a sleeve mounted to the frame of the apparatus and extending between the shaft and drive member, and bearings positioned between the shaft and sleeve. Also, the drive component is mounted to the frame by an arrangement which permits adjustment of the rotational axis of the drive whorl about a second axis which perpendicularly intersects the rotational axis, so as to permit accurate alignment of the rotational axis of the whorl along a direction perpendicular to the running direction of the tangential drive belt. The discs are mounted to the frame by a bearing assembly which includes a tubular sleeve which is releasably mounted to the frame, a rotational shaft extending coaxially through the sleeve and mounting the disc at one end, and bearings positioned between the shaft and sleeve.

The apparatus includes first and second false twisting units associated with each twisting position, with all of the first units being aligned in a first horizontal row extending along the length of the apparatus, and all of the second units being aligned in a second horizontal row. The two rows may be oriented with respect to each other, and the other elements of each twisting position, so that the paths of travel of the two components have an equal twisting length, and an equal cooling length.

    • A yarn false twisting method and apparatus is disclosed, and which includes a pair of oppositely rotating friction discs which are mounted with opposing faces to define a twisting zone therebetween. The yarn is advanced through the twisting zone to impart twist to the yarn in one direction, and the advancing yarn is deflected downstream of the discs so that the yarn is brought into frictional contact with the peripheral edge of one of the discs, to thereby impart an opposite twist to the yarn. The invention is useful in that it permits increased running speed and twist level, and the resulting yarn may be characterized by reduced instances of "tight spots" and less fuzziness resulting from filament breaks.

    • A yarn heating chamber is disclosed which is adapted for thermally processing an advancing yarn. The chamber comprises first and second members each having a discontinuity in the form of a groove, shoulder or the like in the front surface thereof, and the members are movably mounted with respect to each other between an operative position wherein the discontinuities are positioned relative to each other to define a relatively narrow yarn passage, and a threading position defining an enlarged opening to facilitate threading. Also, at least one of the first and second members includes a rear surface which faces oppositely from the front surface of such member. Heating means is provided for introducing a hot pressurized vapor into the yarn passage when the members are in the operative position, and a portion of the hot pressurized vapor is directed into contact with the rear surface so that the hot pressurized vapor acts to bias the front surfaces toward each other to provide a firm contact therebetween.

    • A yarn false twisting apparatus is disclosed which comprises a flexible disc mounted for rotation with a cooperating rigid disc to define a twisting zone therebetween. A pressure applying member is positioned adjacent the back face of the flexible disc for biasing the disc toward the rigid disc locally at the twisting zone so as to firmly engage the yarn passing through the twisting zone. The flexible disc comprises a hub portion disposed adjacent the center of the disc, an annular ring disposed concentrically about the hub portion and including a yarn engaging friction surface on one face thereof, and a distinct and highly flexible junction portion joining the hub portion and annular ring. The highly flexible junction portion permits the annular ring to readily flex in the lateral direction, to thereby permit the deflecting force to be minimized, while still permitting the rotating torque to be transmitted to the annular ring without significant circumferential deformation. The annular ring may also be divided into segments by radial or circumferential slots, to further reduce its resistance to the lateral deforming force of the pressure applying member, and to provide a substantially linear contact with the running yarn.

    • A method and apparatus for twisting a yarn, such as a sliver of staple fibers, is disclosed, and wherein the yarn is advanced through a drafting zone and then through a twisting apparatus. The twisting apparatus includes two circular discs, with at least one of the discs being flexible. Also, in the preferred embodiment, two separate pressure applying members are mounted adjacent the back surface of the flexible disc, with the members being positioned on opposite sides of the plane defined by the axes of rotation of the discs. The two pressure applying members are adapted to be actuated concurrently, with one member defining a first twisting zone wherein S twist is imparted to the advancing yarn, and the other member defines a second twisting zone wherein Z twist is imparted. Means are also provided for controlling the degree of twist imparted at each of the zones, so as to obtain, for example, a twisted yarn composed of core fibers having minimal twist and which are bound by outer fibers of greater twist.

    • An apparatus and method for accelerating textile winder synchronous motor drives from standstill to rated running speed wherein a synchronous motor is first accelerated asynchronously to a first intermediate speed, then decelerated to and synchronized at a second intermediate speed, then accelerated synchronously to rated speed, while thereby limiting current drawn by the motor to levels not exceeding rated current. The method is automatically followed using apparatus which varies motor input frequency responsive to a predetermined sequence of control signals supplied from a signal source via a transient response profiler which converts sudden changes in signal strength to smooth, gradual changes. As more specifically described herein, only two controllers are needed, and a switching network including time-delay devices selectively supplies one signal or the other via an integrator to a variable frequency converter.
