    • The wheels of a vehicle are driven by synchronous motors energized from cycloconverters controlled by signals of selectively variable magnitude and phase and modulated at motor frequency. The signals for controlling the cycloconverters are generated in the output winding of a rotary vector adder having a pair of ninety-degree displaced energizing windings inductively linked to the output winding. Maximum motor torque is available at start and the displacement angle of the motor voltage is kept to zero and motor voltage is adjusted to a magnitude which will limit motor current to a value not exceeding 125 percent of full load by a current regulated starting circuit having a first operational amplifier which compares a current feedback signal proportional to motor current to a selectively variable power signal proportional to the desired output torque from the motor and set by a foot pedal, a current control amplifier which subtracts a speed signal proportional to motor r.p.m. from the power signal to derive a current control signal which sets maximum motor current, and a variable limit clamping emitter follower which receives the output from the first operational amplifier and provides an output voltage to only one energizing winding of the rotary vector adder and clamps the magnitude of said output voltage to an upper limit which varies with the current control signal so that the voltage applied to the vector adder energizing winding decreases as motor speed increases until the starting circuit output becomes zero at a predetermined motor speed.

    • A process is disclosed for prereducing metallic oxide and sulfide ores to a lower state of oxidation without passing through a liquid phase, at an accelerated rate. The ore particles are preheated to 1,800* or above. An unreformed hydrocarbon fuel such as natural gas (CH4) substantially free of any oxidizing agents is passed into a bed of such preheated ore particles to pyrolytically decompose and reform portions of the fuel into strong reducing agents while in intimate contact with the oxidic metal to be reduced. Such forming of reducing agents cause at least some ore to very quickly reduce to a lower state of oxidation with an attendant solid state reorientation of metal and/or sulfur and oxygen atoms. The atomic reorientation provides increased porosity, and greater surface area is exposed to the strong reducing agents for additional and continued reduction. Portions of as yet unreformed fuel in the bed are rapidly reformed by continued pyrolysis and by reacting with oxygen and/or sulfur from the ore, to provide additional quantities of strong reducing agents.

    • A headbox is disclosed having vertical flow chamber connected to a curved a tapered nozzle which defines a slice opening for jetting paper stock from the flow chamber along a that having both horizontal and vertical components and into a nip above a cylindrical forming roll and beneath a felt tangentially engaging an upper portion of the forming roll. The headbox nozzle has an upper and lower lip projecting into the nip. an adjusting mechanism is provided for the upper lip which includes a plurality of adjusting arms each connected on one end to the top of the upper lip proximate to the slice opening. the arm projects from the slice opening toward the flow chamber end of the nozzle and diverges from the upper lip to define a generally wedge-shaped space between the arm and the upperlip. A horizontal pivot is connected to the arm intermediate the ends thereof. A journal is connected to the pivot and has a like portion which spans the space between the adjusting arm and the upper lip and is connected to the upper lip. The adjusting arm is made up of a first and a second section pivotally connected by a horizontal pin at a location between the journal and the flow chamber end of the adjusting arm. The section that comprises the slice opening end of the arm has a portion projecting around the pin with a terminal end of this portion vertically spaced above the other of the section. A vertically adjustable link connects this terminal end portion of the one section, to said other of the section, to said other of the section, to provide for holding the two sections of each arm in variable preselected angular positions relative to each other for warping the upper slice lip to provide a desired profile to the upper lip. A horizontal rotatable drive shaft is mounted on the headbox adjacent the flow chamber end of the adjusting arm and this shaft has a horizontal pin attached to the periphery of the shaft which projects into a slot defined in the adjacent end which projects into a slot defined in the adjacent end of the arm. Rotation of the drive shaft raises and lowers the connected end of the adjusting arm about the pivot and bends the upper lip to vertically adjust the position of the slice opening end of the upper lip relative to the lower lip.

    • In a vacuum type circuit interrupter having a pair of relatively movable contacts, each contact comprises a contact stud to which a relatively wider copper contact body or disk is attached. Magnetically permeable, highly resistive arc propelling means are embedded in the contact body. These means comprise a circular center portion of the same or larger diameter as the contact stud and from which (or from near which) a plurality of spirally shaped arms or vanes radiate towards the periphery of the contact. The arc propelling means create a looped current path in the contact body during contact closed position to intensify outwardly radiating magnetic forces upon contact opening to improve arc rotation thereby aiding in arc extinguishment.

    • A high voltage circuit breaker assembly adapted to reduce voltage surges which occur on prestriking of the switch during the closing stroke, such as when switching a capacitor bank onto a high voltage distribution line. The breaker assembly includes a first and a second breaker connected in parallel paths. Each breaker may be a vacuum interrupter. An operating mechanism causes the first breaker to close in series with a resistor during the closing stroke of the operating mechanism and during a later phase of the closing operation the operating mechanism causes closing of the second breaker to bypass the resistor. The operating mechanism includes means for maintaining the first breaker which is in series with the resistor open during the opening operation of the circuit breaker assembly, whereby to insure that the resistor is not in circuit during the opening operation so that the circuit is opened by the second breaker.
