    • A communication system for transferring data through the air over a relatively short fixed distance comprising a transmitting antenna which comprises a leaky coaxial cable for radiating electromagnetic energy modulated with data to be transferred; and a plurality of non-linear fixed beam array antennas for receiving the modulated electromagnetic energy from the leaky coaxial cable. The plurality of fixed beam array antennas are juxtaposed with the transmitting antenna such that the transmitting antenna extends at least partially through the near-field regions of the plurality of fixed beam array antennas. The communication system also comprises a selection means which determines which radio frequency output from the plurality of non-linear fixed beam array antennas exhibits the greatest radio frequency power and outputs that particular radio frequency output to a receiver. Also described is a method of increasing the performance of an antenna system, which comprises the steps of inputting radio frequency signals from a plurality of antennas, selecting that radio frequency signal which comprises the greatest radio frequency power, and outputting the radio frequency signal comprising the greatest radio frequency power.

    • A coaxial-to-coplanar waveguide connector is used for interconnecting stripline compatible devices utilizing coaxial cable. The connector is formed at the end of a length of coaxial cable embedded within a circuit board. The connector generally has a substantially semi-circular connection section. The connection section includes a conductor partly surrounded by an electrically insulative dielectric which is partly surrounded by a shield. An electrically conductive sheet is used to couple the shield to a ground plane of the circuit board. Electrically conductive ribbon is connect the conductor to a stripline compatible device. The coaxial-to-coplanar waveguide connector may be fabricated by coating a dielectric board with an adhesive material and then routing a length of miniature coaxial cable in the adhesive. Conductive material and dielectric material are consecutively laid upon the dielectric cable board. A portion of the board including a section of miniature coaxial cable is milled so as to remove a top portion of the cable. An electrically conductive material is coupled to the coaxial shield in order to connect the shield to a ground plane of the circuit board and the stripline compatible device. Furthermore, an additional electrically conductive ribbon is operatively connected from the conductor to the stripline compatible device.

    • A high resolution event occurrence time counter includes a free running counter which is responsive to a clock signal and which provides count data that varies in response to the clock signal. A first register stores the count data of the free running counter. The first register provides first register data representative of the count data stored in the register. A second register stores the first register data and provides first time of arrival data representative of the first register data stored in the second register. A third register stores the count data of the free running counter. The third register provides second time of arrival data representative of the count data which is stored in the third register. A clock edge encoder determines whether an event occurred during the first half cycle of the clock signal or during the second half cycle. The clock edge encoder provides a first sync signal when the event occurred during the first half cycle, and a second sync signal when the event occurred during the second half cycle. The second register stores the first register data in response to the first sync signal, and the third register stores the count data in response to the second sync signal. Either the first time of arrival data or the second time of arrival data, depending on whether the first or second sync signal is generated, is provided as output time of arrival data of the event occurrence time counter.

    • A digitally beam formed phased array antenna capable of both transmitting and receiving signals is constructed from a series of digitally controlled antenna elements. To transmit signals, a series of direct digital synthesizers is used to drive the antenna elements forming the phased array. Each direct digital synthesizer is programmed from a common digital processor with specific time and phase delay information such that the signals from the array combine to form a desired antenna pattern. To receive signals, signals from each antenna element in the phased array are processed by analog to digital converter. The digitized signals are then pre-processed in a time and phase delay preprocessor which receives time and phase delay information from a corresponding direct digital synthesizer prior to signal combining in a common digital processor. The digitally beam formed antenna, thus formed, allows for remote reconfiguration, flexible partitioning, and generation of multiple and independent beams from a single phased array.

    • A low noise wide tuning bandwidth voltage controlled oscillator employs a resonator circuit formed from at least two microstrip lines which are electromagnetically coupled to one another. Each of the microstrip lines has one end electrically coupled to circuit ground to provide a substantially inductive resonator circuit which is substantially immune to parasitic end effects and radiation loses. The frequency of the voltage controlled oscillator circuit is controlled by a variable capacitance varactor circuit coupled to at least one of the microstrip transmission lines. The resonator circuit is well suited for use with a bipolar transistor configured as a negative resistance oscillator.
