    • A power cable for a submersible motor has a releasable plug-in connector for releasable attachment to the motor. An oil-filled motor has solid conductors to the motor connector part and the flexible conductors to the cable connector part. The cable connector part has a plurality of lead terminals located in a common plane and a plastic molded shell which is flat and rectangular. A shell flange is bolted to the motor. An integrated voltage surge arrestor is located in an opening in the shell which exposes the terminals, and includes a thin arrestor block of silicon carbide or metal oxide varistor secured to a mounting plate which seals the opening. The silicon carbide block is a porous fragile unit supported by the plate and connected to ground by the well liquid, or by a connection to the clamp bolts. The two outer terminals are connected to the 230 voltage lines and the opening is formed with intermediate line insulation separating the chambers of such outer terminals. The arrestor assembly is similarly formed in either a two-wire or a three-wire submersible motor cable. The surge arrestor may be located within a motor and in other cable configurations.

    • A cathodically protected lined water heater tank in which zinc rich paint is employed between the tank of the water heater and fittings, threaded or otherwise secured to the tank. The zinc rich paint acts as a distributed or secondary anode to charge exposed metal at the location of the paint with a protective potential against corrosion and also as a sealant which increases in volume for increased sealing effect when products of corrosion are produced as the zinc rich paint reacts with the water in the water heater. The zinc rich paint is used in combination with a primary zinc anode extending within the fluid stored in the water heater.

    • A D.C. shunt motor has the armature connected to a three-phase supply through a pair of parallel connected full-wave rectifier bridges, each having silicon controlled rectifiers in each leg. A separate NOR logic circuit controls gating of each rectifier in accordance with the proper half cycle of the applied voltage and at the desired phase angle to establish a predetermined energization level. The firing is determined by an intercept detector having a separate channel for each phase. Each channel is connected through a lag filter and a lead filter directly to the corresponding phase winding of a reference transformer to supply to the channel a voltage directly derived from the lineto-line voltage applied to the corresponding rectifier. The input to each channel is connected across a center tapped reference transformer winding and the junction of a resistor and capacitor connected across the winding. A D.C. control voltage is applied to the channels to establish a control signal pulse at the proper phase angle of the rectifier-applied voltage.

    • A storage unit having a gas generator connected to a generally sealed storage structure for supplying a controlled atmosphere gas to the structure. The generator is controlled by initiating generator operation when the storage structure pressure declines to a predetermined differential with the ambient, and by terminating generator operation when pressure in the storage structure builds to a second predetermined differential above the value of the first. A set of pressure switches in communication with storage pressure detect the predetermined differentials and start and stop the generator through an interlocking switching circuit connecting the switches to a generator control. The interlocking switching circuit includes a timer which precludes the pressure switches from frequent starting and stopping of the generator.

    • This disclosure relates to a thermal bimetal operator for a multiple line control switch unit and to the method of construction. A switch housing is provided with a series of small cavities in one end wall. A bimetal strip includes an L-shaped tab which projects into the recess. A thermoset resin is disposed within the respective cavities and the bimetal strips are resiliently clamped with the outer end of the bimetal element disposed outwardly of a set position. A U-shaped trip bar is pivotally mounted within the housing with the base engaging the free ends of the bimetal strips and with an outer arm aligned with a switch blade. The switch is a snap action overcenter variety having the compensating switch arm or blade projecting laterally parallel to the trip bar and interengaged by the depending arm of the trip bar. The switch includes an adjustment screw connected to a pivot support to control the snap action position. The assembly is placed in a fixture having a support pin extending through a housing opening to support the outer arm and an adjustable tool spring loaded rod extending through an opposite housing opening into engagement with the switch blade to position the components including the bimetal strips. the fixture and assembly are placed in a curing oven which is raised to the curing temperature. Prior to the setting of the resin and after the operating temperature is established, the switch adjustment is made. The curing step is then completed.
