    • A multi-stage frequency offset (FO) estimation and compensation method and its circuit are described. The method includes performing at least a stage of primary-level FO estimation and compensation procedure, and a stage of advance-level FO estimation and compensation procedure. The first stage receives an input carrier signal of a larger FO and outputs a corrected carrier signal with an estimation error within the required estimation range of the next stage, to the next stage. Generated and fed forward stage-by-stage, the corrected carrier signal free of FO may be approached. Besides, since a feed-forward rather than a closed-loop approach is employed, the SNR requirement may be lower. Also, at primary-level, modulation may be first removed so the whole input carrier signal may be used to estimate FO; at advance-level, the periodic PN sequence in the input carrier signal may be utilized to estimate FO, thereby no dedicated training symbols are required.

    • Systems and methods for removing phase shifts due to hierarchical modulation to improve synchronization and performance in legacy and hierarchical decoders are presented. To compensate for the effects of hierarchical modulation, such methods include receiving an I,Q symbol that has been further modulated by an overlay phase shift, detecting the direction of the overlay phase shift, de-rotating the symbol by a defined angle corresponding to the overlay phase shift and said direction; and passing the symbol to legacy synchronization and forward error correction decoding stages after said de-rotating. An exemplary receiver can be provided to implement the disclosed methods.

    • A phase noise correction device having a function for accurately detecting a phase noise component and capable of reducing a load on a reception device is provided. A phase noise correction device for correcting a phase noise generated in a local oscillator includes: a division section that divides a signal generated in the local oscillator; a reference signal generation section that generates a signal of the same frequency as that of the divided signal; a phase difference detection section that detects a phase difference between the divided signal and the generated reference signal; and a phase noise correction section that gives a phase rotation to a baseband signal in the direction that cancels the phase noise according to the detected phase difference as a phase noise component.

    • Counter-clockwise and clockwise quadrant transitions are detected and accumulated with respect to a received complex signal over a certain time period. These transitions may then be compared in order to obtain information indicative of both a magnitude and phase of a carrier frequency error for the received signal. Additionally, zero-crossings of the received complex signal over the same certain time period are detected and accumulated. The accumulated crossings provide information indicative of frequency offset magnitude. The determined magnitude and phase of the frequency error may then be used to adjust a local oscillator frequency to provide for improved receiver performance.
