    • A device and apparatus for determining wind conditions around a sailboat. The device includes means for receiving a measured wind angle and wind speed readings from a wind sensor attached to the sailboat and readings of boat heading and boat speed through the water, means for storing wind angle correction data, a computing unit for computing a corrected wind angle reading using the measured wind angle reading, the boat speed reading and the wind angle correction data and for computing a wind direction using the corrected wind angle reading and the boat heading reading, and means for displaying the wind direction. The device additionally includes input means for receiving a wind direction error tack to tack, means for determining the current tack state of the sailboat using the measured wind angle reading, and means for modifying the correction data. Thus, powerful and intuitive correction of wind direction readings is possible.

    • For an infestation of scab to develop through its initial stages requires the presence of prolonged periods of leaf surface wetness to enable the spores to germinate. Apparatus is provided which monitors the ambient temperature and humidity to detect the occurrence of periods of leaf wetness sufficient to permit the initial development of an infestation. When the occurrence of such a period of wetness is detected, the apparatus changes its operating state to indicate the progress of the infestation through its secondary stages, this progress being dependent on the ambient temperature but not the wetness of the leaves. The apparatus follows the progress of the infestation by means of a monitoring device which generates a pulsed signal whose frequency is dependent on the ambient temperature and humidity, the pulses of this signal being then counted in counter means and selectively displayed on a display. A leaf wetness sensor is arranged to inhibit the counter means during the initial infestation stage except in the presence of conditions favoring spore development.

    • An apparatus for indicating direction and velocity of the wind wherein a bar, supported somewhat off its center of gravity is mounted so it can both rotate 360 degrees about a vertical axis and tilt somewhat over 45 degrees from the horizontal. At each end of the bar a miniature or model airplane is mounted which can also pivot relative to the bar within limits. The model airplane on the heavier portion of the bar creates more drag than that of the forward airplane and also its elevator and ailerons are adjusted so that the model airplane at the rear tends to fly upwardly. In contrast, the model airplane on the forward end of the bar has less lift than the rear model airplane or, if desired, a negative lift with its elevator disposed whereby the forward airplane tends to fly downwardly or to dive. Both airplanes point in the same direction and dispose themselves and the bar into the wind due to the somewhat greater drag on the after airplane. When the wind is minimal, the rear portion of the bar is inclined downwardly whereas the forward portion is inclined upwardly. However, as the wind velocity increases, the after airplane rises whereas the forward airplane descends in altitude. In a strong wind with high velocity, the bar is tilted with the forward end down and the rearward portion of the bar upwardly whereas the rear airplane is at a higher level than the forward airplane. Both model airplanes are permitted to pivot within limits relative to the bar and the after airplane is mounted on a depending rod. A propeller is provided for each model airplane which although primarily for appearance purposes, nevertheless lends a certain amount of stabilization to the model aircraft.

    • This specification discloses a direct reading comfort index thermometer for determining the temperature, humidity and air movement index of the ambient atmosphere, comprising a panel displaying a row of calibrations, a transparent tube mounted on said panel along said row, a tubular reservoir connected at its mid-point to one end of said tube and a temperature-responsive liquid in said reservoir which rises or falls in said tube in response to change in ambient conditions. One leg of the tubular reservoir is covered, or partially covered, with a water absorbent material such as a fabric. A chart along side of said calibrations shows corrections to apply to index readings for various air movement conditions, which chart may be expressed as degrees to be deducted from the comfort index or as percentages to be deducted from the index.
