    • In a DC type C-shaped welding gun apparatus having a transformer mounted thereon, a center tap of the transformer is communicated to a movable gun arm via an ounce metal plate. A rear end portion of a stationary gun arm is pressingly held between a pair of terminal plates via rectifiers. Both terminal plates are disposed such that their center line is offset to one widthwise side of the transformer. The stationary gun arm is thus disposed to one widthwise side of a projected area of the transformer. The ounce metal plate for supplying electric power to the movable gun arm is disposed to the other side of the projected area. In an X-shaped welding gun apparatus, a first gun arm is rotatably supported by a supporting shaft provided on a gun bracket. A second gun arm is directly connected to one of feeder terminals of a transformer to constitute the second gun arm and the transformer into a unit. This unit is rotatably supported by the supporting shaft via a supporting arm, and the other of the feeder terminals is connected to the first gun arm via the supporting arm. The supporting arm is used as a feeder member. The feeder member can thus be disposed within the width of the gun bracket. A pressurizing cylinder is supported on the supporting arm along the transformer. The vacant space around the transformer is utilized as a space for disposing the cylinder to thereby minimize the size of the welding gun.

    • The motorized weld head employs a control system which allows user control of critical welding parameters such as speed, force, position, and duration. The control system includes a position servo loop attached to a motor-driven output shaft on which a welding electrode is mounted via a spring. During a weld cycle, the control system moves the welding electrode toward a workpiece at a rapid user-defined rate. Just prior to when the electrode contacts the workpiece, the speed of the electrode is reduced to prevent damage to the parts. When contact is made, a pressure transducer measures the force exerted by the electrode on the workpiece. A comparator continuously monitors the force measured by the transducer and changes state when the measured force equals a user-defined optimum welding force. A signal is then passed to the servo loop commanding it to hold the position of the electrode effectively maintaining the applied force on the workpiece. When mechanical vibrations diminish, a user-defined weld current is enabled to the electrode. After the weld current is fired, the constant force is maintained until the weld cools. Finally, the welding electrode is automatically raised by the control system, releasing all pressure on the workpiece.

    • A press for performing a work operation on a workpiece including a yoke defining a central bore, a ram mounted for reciprocal movement in the bore and carrying a fabricating tool on one end of the ram, an electric motor secured to an end wall of the yoke and having an output shaft passing through the end wall of the yoke, a ball screw driven by the output shaft of the motor and positioned in the bore of the yoke, a ball nut mounted in the bore on the ball screw, and a force multiplying mechanism interconnecting the ball nut and the ram and operative to move the ram to a preparatory position and thereafter multiply the force applied to the ram to facilitate the performance of the work operation. The force multiplying mechanism includes a linkage system interconnecting the nut and the ram and including a final link which moves into position in proximity of the line of action of the ram as the tool reaches its working position so that subsequent movement of the link toward the line of action multiplies the force exerted on the ram and thereby on the tool. The electric motor is an AC servo motor and and AC servo controller is provided for coaction with the motor to enable the motor to be precisely programmed to provide a predetermined number of revolutions to the ball screw so as to provide a predetermined desired forward stroking movement of the force multiplying mechanism.

    • An improved electrode holder is disclosed that ensures a fluid cooled electrode will have an outer shank properly positioned relative to a cooling fluid tube. The electrode holder includes a ring portion with an inner periphery having an O-ring and a plurality of jaw teeth which receive the electrode. The electrode has a conically tapered portion at one end which extends from a first diameter outwardly to a second diameter. The inner periphery of the ring portion is of a third diameter intermediate the first and second diameter of the conically tapered portion. The conically tapered portion of the electrode is received within the inner periphery of the ring portion to a certain extent. At a predetermined point the O-ring within the ring portion abuts the conically tapered portion defining a desired position for the electrode. The cooling fluid tube is positioned within a body at a fixed point and is received within the electrode. Thus, it is ensured that the electrode is properly positioned with respect to the cooling fluid tube. The jaw teeth have a cylindrical outer periphery for the majority of their axial extent so that the electrode holder may be easily mounted within most existing electrode combinations.
