    • An electrical assembly for selectively supplying either 120 volts or 227 volts from a junction box to a high intensity discharge lamp fixture via a dual voltage ballast and a dual voltage electrical connector. The dual voltage electrical connector has dual operation capacity with input voltages of either 120 or 277 volts. The connector comprises a female connector having nine bores extending therethrough with female terminals fixedly coupled within four of the bores, and a male connector having nine bores extending therethrough with contact pins extending outwardly from four of these bores. When the connectors are coupled together in their first orientation, the male contact pin which conducts 120 volts of electricity engages the female terminal connected to a line wire. When the male and female connectors are manually rotated 180.degree. relative to one another into their second orientation, a different pin, which conducts 277 volts, engages the line wire terminal. A latching device is fixedly coupled to the two connectors for releasably coupling the two connectors together.

    • Fluorescent type lamps are arranged to have high frequency power derived from standard, commercial A.C. sources either directly or from power levels distributed from a master ballast. When the master ballast is employed, it functions as an interface between the primary power source and a distribution network to one or more modules so as to relieve the modules of operations such as initial power form conversions, filtering and power factors correcting which require large components. The module or modules driven by the master ballast output are contained within the lamp envelope or attached as an extension of the lamp envelope. The module is formed of elements mounted as a miniaturized unit configured to fit within the lamp envelope or to attach to the end of the envelope. The module includes oscillator components mounted on an envelope board so as to form an assembly with a cross-section compatible with the perimeter of the envelope itself. The module can operate independent of a master ballast unit by including power handling circuitry within the module.

    • A variable inductor includes at most one coil of electrically conductive material and at most two distinct, separately formed portions of magnetic core material positioned to conduct magnetic flux resulting from passage of electrical current through the coil. At least one of the portions of magnetic core material is located at least partially within a space surrounded by the coil and is movable with respect to the coil. A control device is attached to the movable portion of magnetic core material in a manner such that the movable portion can be moved in its entirety, by manipulating the control device, to change the configuration of a gap within the space surrounded by the coil and defined in part by the movable portion, to vary thereby the inductance of the coil.

    • All the magnetic functions required in a ballast for a fluorescent lamp are integrated in a single, standard magnetic core which provides isolation, voltage step-up, ballasting, power factor correction and cathode heat for multiple lamps operating multiple lamps in an isolated-series configuration. In a three-legged transformer core embodiment, the primary winding is continuously wound on all three legs, while secondary windings are included on two of the legs. Ballasting inductance is provided by winding the primary on the third leg. The number of primary turns N.sub.p necessary to avoid saturation of the transformer for any specific input voltage and core material, the number of primary windings N.sub.p1 on the secondary legs and the number of primary windings N.sub.p2 on the third leg are determined according to the equation 2N.sub.p1 =N.sub.p -N.sub.p2.
