    • A guide device for use with a pulley block of the type utilized by utility lineman during installation of an electrical power line is disclosed. The guide device is a generally C-shaped member having inwardly converging curved leg members projecting from a body portion thereof. The guide device is permanently captured within the pulley block in its functional position wherein the C-shaped body member engages the pulley wheel to prevent a lightweight feeder line extending through the pulley block from slipping off the pulley wheel and becoming jammed in the installation process. Thus, the present guide device eliminates the need for repeated climbing of the power pole by the lineman during the process of feeding the power line through the pulley block thereby providing obvious economic advantages.

    • There is disclosed a method of installing spiral hangers for hanging a cable on a messenger wire installed between a pair of electric utility poles. One end of a spiral hanger is first movably attached to the messenger wire in the vicinity of one of the electric utility poles. The spiral hanger has an inner diameter greater than the sum of the outer diameter of the messenger wire and the outer diameter of the cable. Subsequently, the spiral hanger is transported toward the other of the electric utility poles, and the other end of the spiral hanger is joined to one end of a succeeding spiral hanger through use of a joint sleeve. Above-described operations are repeated, and the spiral hangers are fixed to the messenger wire through use of fixing devices when the first spiral hanger arrives at the other of the electric utility poles. Subsequently, a cable is passed through the spiral hangers through use of a pull-rope threading implement, whereby the cable is installed by work performed only in the vicinity of the electric utility poles. Special implements are used in order to facilitate the installation of the spiral hangers.

    • An isolating switch for an electric power line including a sub-assembly made up of two electrically conductive and pieces interconnected by at least one insulator. The end pieces have respective aligned grooves for registry with the electric power line, and securing members for permanently securing the end pieces to the electric power line. The sub-assembly is provided with two keeper bars for mounting the sub-assembly to the power line prior to permanently securing the end pieces to the power line. Each of the keeper bars is pivotally mounted on a respective one of the end pieces and is pivotable manually between a first position in which the keeper bar is completely clear of the groove and a second position in which the keeper bar extends across the groove to retain the sub-assembly on the power line. A detent member is provided on each end piece for cooperation with the respective keeper bar, and a spring member urges the keeper bar and detent member into mutual engagement when the keeper bar is in the second position to retain the keeper bar in the second position.

    • This invention is directed to a multipurpose repair and maintenance apparatus for aerial inspection, repair and cleaning, comprising a work platform for installation on the skids of an helicopter and sustaining a boom assembly and a fluid circuit such that the loads on the work platform are fully balanced. The work platform is made of electrically conductive material and all electrically conductive parts of the apparatus are connected to the electrically conductive parts of the helicopter to have same electrical potential. The boom assembly extends from the port side of the work platform and has an inboard section and an outboard section. A pumping assembly is mounted on a power drive mount at the starboard side of the platform, so as to balance the weight of the boom assembly. A boom actuator is provided at the onboard end of the boom assembly and controls the vertical and horizontal movement of the outboard end. The fluid circuit includes the pumping assembly and fluid conduits guided along the boom assembly for spraying cleaning fluid from a fluid storage tank through a nozzle located at the outboard end of the boom assembly. The orientation of the nozzle is controlled with a nozzle control arm. When the work platform is used for inspection or repair, the boom assembly is removed and a wing is attached to the portside. Now, the weight of the inspector/repairman at the portside is balanced by the weight of the power drive mount at the starboard side. In addition, the length of the starboard side of the work platform and the port side is also selected so that the loads are balanced.

    • An apparatus and method for positioning an animal guard on a transformer insulator elevated a remote distance above the ground by an individual located on the ground is provided. The apparatus includes an elongated pole and a guard applicator. The pole has a first end positionable near the ground and a second end extendible so that the second end is positionable adjacent the insulator. The guard applicator has a first end and a second end, the first end connected to the second end of the elongated pole, the second end having a pair of outer prongs spaced apart a distance from one another so that the outer prongs are slidably positionable into a pair lateral loops formed on the guard. The second end of the applicator having a pair of support surfaces positioned adjacent the outer prongs to support the guard in cooperation with the outer prongs in a substantially horizontal position when the guard is positioned on the applicator with the outer prongs positioned in the lateral loops of the guard device and the pole is in a substantially vertical orientation.
