    • An improved electromagnet assembly is disclosed for use in electrically actuated drum brakes. The electromagnet assembly has a cup shaped stamped metal housing. A center pole is mounted in a central opening in the housing which has stepped edges so as to alternately engage the center pole and form arcuate gaps about the center pole. A flux washer is positioned on the center pole to bridge the gaps for increasing the efficiency of the electromagnet. A solenoid winding is positioned within the opening defined by the housing, the flux washer and the center pole and the opening is closed with a friction material.

    • In a drum brake, a wheel cylinder is located between a pair of adjacent shoe ends for a pair of brake shoes and a piston inserted into the wheel cylinder is slidably engaged through an anchor provided on a backing plate and further the piston is provided with a flange on the side thereof pressing a brake shoe so that the anchor is interposed between the flange of the piston and the wheel cylinder, and, furthermore, a strut is located between the other pair of adjacent shoe ends for the pair of the brake shoes in order to lighten a weight of the brake and facilitate a disassembly and assembly of the brake.

    • An internal shoe drum brake comprises a pair of brake shoes, an adjustable length strut extending between the shoes and having a ratchet movement of which adjusts the length of the strut, an actuating lever pivotally connected to one end of the strut and engaging one shoe, the lever being so arranged that a force acting on one end in a direction generally parallel to the drum axis rotates the lever to exert a force on one shoe and a reaction force through the intermediary of the strut on the other shoe to urge said shoes apart, and a pawl engageable with the ratchet. To reduce the number of parts the pawl is pivotally mounted on the other shoe and is rotatable about its pivot to move the ratchet and thereby adjust the length of the strut when there is excess wear of the shoes. Furthermore, the strut preferably has a portion which is engageable with a surface portion of the brake back plate, or a member secured to the back plate, to react forces to the back plate. The surface portion is preferably parallel with the strut axis to permit sliding movement of the strut thereon.

    • A brake and wheel assembly for vehicles having small diameter wheels and heavy axle loading requiring high capacity braking is disclosed. An axle extension shaft cantilevered transversely on a vehicle frame mounts rotatably a dual wheel hub which also serves as a brake rotor in coaction with a pair of wide brake shoes. A mounting unit for brake mechanism including a rigid backbone member is cantilevered from the vehicle frame across the axis of the axle extension shaft and brake rotor. The backbone member locates and supports front and rear brake cylinder bodies and associated anchor pins for the brake shoes and also supports a brake shoe upper guide. Brake shoe hold-down bases and other components are attached to a back plate of the brake mechanism mounting unit which also includes a side cover. A mechanical parking and emergency brake is included in the assembly along with required brake adjustment features. Compactness, ruggedness, ease of assembling and servicing and the use of standard automotive-type wheels are primary features.

    • An electromagnet for brakes and clutches having outer and inner poles and an electrical coil for creating a magnetic field between these poles is provided having a circumferential gap in the forward portion of the outer pole. The gap reduces the flux density over the forward portion of the magnet face while increasing the flux density over the rearward portion. The variable flux density over the magnet face thus establishes an unbalance of forces attracting the magnet toward the armature plate causing the magnet to engage the armature plate heel first thereby eliminating "squeal" caused by magnet gouging and two plane wear of the magnet's friction face.

    • A drum brake assembly includes a torque member which supports a hydraulic actuator. The hydraulic actuator is engageable with a pair of brake shoes and is operable to move the pair of brake shoes into a braking position. The torque member comprises a central portion which attaches to an axle assembly and a plurality of arms extending radially outward from the central portion. In the preferred embodiment the plurality of arms cooperate with the central portion to substantially form a Y-shaped member. One of the arms substantially forms the hydraulic actuator to integrally form the latter with the one arm. The other arms are provided with slots to direct the movement of the pair of brake shoes and a resilient spring within the slots opposes axial movement of the pair of brake shoes.
