    • A hinge is described for use along each side of a refrigerator or on furniture to permit safe opening of the door or lid from either side. The hinge is uncomplicated in design, and is comprised of only a few component parts. Each hinge includes a hinge rod forming a swivel axis for the door, said rod held in an axle take-up receiver. At least one and preferably two interlocks are located at or near the top and bottom of each hinge rod. The interlocks comprise a hinge pick-up axially aligned with the swivel axis of the hinge and a hinge element which becomes mechanically coupled to the pick-up when the door is opened in the other direction. Details of the embodiments of the hinge are disclosed. Preferably, magnetic means are used to keep the hinge rod engaged with the swivel axis and to form the airtight seal between the door and the cabinet.

    • A hinge for removably attaching a cover member to a container member. The hinge includes a first plate affixable to one of the members and a second plate affixable to the other of the members. A first tubular socket is formed integrally with the first plate and a second tubular socket is formed integrally with the second plate. The first and second tubular sockets are aligned when the first and second plates are affixed in alignment to the container and cover members. A J-shaped rod is formed with a longer leg and a shorter leg joined by a integral bail. A cap is formed on the end of the longer leg which is located away from the bail. The J-shaped rod is mounted on the first plate with its longer leg extending through the first tubular socket. A coil spring telescopes over a portion of the longer leg of the J-shaped rod with the spring engaging the first tubular socket and the cap to bias the bail against the opposite side of the first tubular socket and to seat the shorter leg in the second tubular socket. The shorter leg is movable in and out of the second tubular socket to latch the plates together or to function as a hinge permitting rotation of one plate relative to the other plate.

    • Means for controlling pivotal doors in nuclear plants, more specifically to control doors separating storage basins for nuclear materials. Instead of providing the control means on the wall structure of juxtaposed door openings, the control means are mounted on the door panels. They include a pair of fluid-operated cylinder-and-piston motors, the direction of operation of the pistons being parallel to an edge of the door panel. The cylinder-and-piston motors are preferably mounted on an edge of the door panel. Each motor operates a linkage that includes two rods, of which one is raised when the other is lowered. One of the two rods controls abutment means precluding the door from pivoting about one of its edges, and allowing the door to pivot only about the other of its edges. The other of the two rods controls latching means which, in one position thereof firmly clamp the door panel against the cooperating door opening to exert a sealing effect and which, in the other position thereof, frees the door panel and terminates the sealing effect.
