    • The invention provides a catalyst composition, comprising: (a) an organolithium compound; and, (b) an organic acid salt of lanthanide series element; wherein: (1) only components (a) and (b) are required to promote the synthesis of 1,4-trans-polybutadiene; (2) the ratio of component (a) to component (b) is selected to maximize formation of the trans structure of said 1,4-trans-polybutadiene; and, (3) components (a) and (b) are selected for enabling further diblock synthesis. The invention further contemplates a process for using the catalyst to synthesize 1,4-trans-polybutadiene and other polymers and copolymers having trans configuration in the conjugated diene monomer contributed units.

    • An improved pneumatic tire having decreased rolling resistance employing at least one tire component selected from the group consisting of subtreads, black sidewall, body ply skims and bead fillers, prepared from a vulcanizable elastomeric composition having reduced hysteresis comprises from about 10 to 100 parts by weight of an elastomer comprising a plurality of polymer molecules, wherein substantially each polymer molecule contains at least one functional group at the site of initiation, and having a hysteresis reduction of at least about 10 percent compared to the same elastomer without a functional group on substantially each polymer molecule; from about 0 to 90 parts by weight of an elastomer having greater hysteresis than the elastomer having reduced hysteresis and selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, synthetic rubber and blends thereof; and, from about 20 to about 100 parts by weight of carbon black, per 100 parts of the elastomer. A method is also provided for reducing the rolling resistance of tires.

    • It has been determined that 1,3-butadiene monomer can be polymerized into cis-l,4-polybutadiene rubber utilizing a cobalt-based catalyst system which is comprised of (a) an organocobalt compound, (b) a trialkylaluminum compound and (c) hexafluoro-2-propanol. The use of this catalyst system results in extremely fast rates of polymerization. The molecular weight of the cis-1,4- polybutadiene rubber made utilizing this cobalt-based catalyst system can be regulated by conducting the polymerization in the presence of 1,5-cyclooctadiene. This present invention more specifically discloses a catalyst system which is particularly useful for polymerizing 1,3-butadiene monomer into cis-1,4-polybutadiene, said catalyst system being comprised of (a) an organocobalt compound, (b) a trialkylaluminum compound and (c) hexafluoro-2-propanol. The subject invention further discloses a process for synthesizing cis-1,4-polybutadiene rubber which comprises polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in the presence of (a) an organocobalt compound, (b) a trialkylaluminum compound and (c) hexafluoro-2-propanol.

    • Syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene is a thermoplastic resin which has double bonds attached in an alternating fashion to its polymeric backbone. Films, fibers and molded articles can be made utilizing syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene. It can also be blended into rubbers and cocured therewith. It is generally preferred to synthesize syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene in an aqueous medium by suspension or emulsion polymerization. In such aqueous polymerization techniques reactor fouling and particle size control problems are frequently encountered. This invention is based upon the unexpected finding that reactor fouling can be greatly reduced or eliminated and that particle size can be regulated by conducting such aqueous polymerizations in the presence of a controlled amount of dissolved oxygen which is within the range of about 0.01 ppm to about 4 ppm. This invention more specifically discloses a process for preparing syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene in an aqueous medium with minimal reactor fouling which comprises polymerizing 1,3-butadiene monomer in the aqueous medium in the presence of (1) a catalyst system which is comprised of (a) transition metal compound, (b) an organoaluminum compound and (c) at least one member selected from the group consisting of carbon disulfide, phenyl isothiocyanate and xanthic acid and (2) from about 0.01 ppm to about 4 ppm of oxygen.
