    • A log sawing apparatus is described for enabling a single person to control the sawing operation at a single log sawing station. The apparatus includes means for prealigning the log with respect to a projected grid in a first plane. After being prealigned, the log is transferred to the log sawing station where the log is held stationary. A saw carriage with a main saw thereon moves past the log sawing station to cut the log lengthwise. The log is held stationary by a log holding means that may be moved laterally to progressively feed the log laterally with the sawing plane. Log rotating means is provided at the log sawing station to rotate the log 90.degree. or 180.degree. to progressively present various log sides to the sawing plane. Additionally, a second alignment means is provided to align the log with respect to a second grid pattern to align the log in a second plane normal to the first plane.

    • Plural scanners are employed for detecting the surface features of a wood cant preparatory to sawing the cant into one or more boards. A scanner includes a radiation detector disposed above the cant on the wane side thereof, and a radiation source below the cant whereby the edges of the cant may be detected. A further pair of radiation sources are also located above the cant on the wane side thereof in angular relation to the detector for producing radiation beams which intersect the detection path of the detector only at a surface level corresponding to a predetermined acceptable wood thickness, as distinguished from the forward and rearward wanes. The wanes are detected as the region between detector illumination by the source below the cant, and detector illumination from the pair of sources above the cant.

    • The sawing of an elongated workpiece, such as a log or cant, by feeding the workpiece longitudinally through a saw; sensing the longitudinal configuration of a longitudinal side surface of the workpiece on one side only of the workpiece as the latter passes through the saw; and orientating the workpiece relative to the saw in accordance with the sensed configuration to saw the workpiece longitudinally substantially parallel to the sensed configuration. For the sawing of a crooked workpiece, the configuration of a longitudinally extending concave side surface is sensed and the workpiece is sawn "round the curve" substantially parallel to the sensed concave configuration the workpiece is orientated by resiliently exerting lateral pressure thereon on the side thereof on which the longitudinal configuration is sensed. The invention covers the method of sawing workpieces, as well as apparatus for sawing and for controlling the sawing process.

The method includes the steps of positioning each log along a reference axis, electronically scanning the log to determine certain of its dimensions with respect to the reference axis, computing the center axis of the largest surface of a preselected shape that can be superimposed within the measured dimensions, and repositioning the log with the center axis parallel to an index line such as the cutting line of a predetermined processing equipment. Scanning arrangements and processing apparatus are disclosed for practicing the steps of the method in the processing of logs of different diameters.

    • The present invention comprises a rotating drum assembly mounted on a framework above a conveyor assembly disposed transversely to the drum, a cross conveyor in the conveyor assembly operable to drivingly feed lumber into a saw assembly. The rotating drum assembly is provided with a multiplicity of groups of wires suitably fastened to the opposite terminal end plates of the drum and a light projecting source suitably mounted in the drum being operable to project light through unit groups of wires passing under the light projecting source in response to rotation of the drum and to project shadow impages of the wires upon lumber traveling on the conveyor therebeneath. The drum assembly also includes a parallax guide suitably fixed inside the rotating drum assembly operable to planarly orient unit groups of wires on the drum as they are caused to pass over the guide in response to rotation of the drum. The wires of each of the unit groups are parallelly spaced apart on the drum a distance geometrically coincident with the spacing of parallel mounted saw blades in the saw assembly. Each unit group of wires on the drum are spaced apart a distance geometrically coincident with the spacing of lumber guide bars on the conveyor assembly. Adjusting means is provided on the drum assembly to interrupt the synchronous drive of the drum operable to selectively align shadow impages on a selected piece of lumber being carried by a respective guide bar on the conveyor. The adjusting means is electrically interconnected to the saw assembly to selectively align saw blades coincident with the shadow line images on the lumber. The conveyor assembly comprises an endless conveyor disposed about a table framework and including a multiplicity of equally spaced guide bars disposed transversely to the direction of travel of the conveyor. Means are provided on the table to urge lumber on the table against respective guide bars. A cross conveyor is distally disposed near one of the terminal ends of the conveyor being operable to drivingly feed lumber into the saw assembly. Driving rollers in the cross conveyor are disposed at an angle between a pair of opposing side frame members. In this manner lumber tends to be drivingly fed into the saw assembly and urged against one of the side frame members. Lumber is drivingly fed into the saw assembly from a preselected fixed datum reference guide formed by the side frame member. Hence, the relationship between the datum reference guide and the preselected position of saws in the saw assembly is the same as the relationship of projected shadow images on the lumber and its position against the respective guide bar on the conveyor assembly. Means are provided on the conveyor table to selectively support lumber above the cross conveyor and to planarly drop the lumber flatly onto the cross conveyor. Electrically interconnecting control means are also provided to selectively lower individual saw blades into engagement with respective pieces of lumber.
