    • Grain is fed from a hopper to a horizontally oriented adjustable speed steam heated auger driven by a variable speed drive. The auger is long enough (approximately twenty inches) that temperature controlled steam fed to a plurality of inlets along the auger as related to the rate of grain movement through the auger heats the gain therein to approximately three hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Then it is dropped through a grain outlet opening into a high velocity cold air stream temperature shocking the hot grain causing a sudden contraction of grain outer layers causing them to crack and loosen from the grain core. The grain is then fed through tubes to space between a rotatable internally rubber (or soft plastic) sheet layer sheathed inner surface outer mill member fitted to and rotatable about a truncated cone member having outer surface metal channel members angled approximately forty five degrees adjacent at the top and diverging at the bottom. The grain is fed to and carried through a guide track with scrubber baffles and slightly corrugated along its length to an exit tube.

    • A chain drive system is provided for communicating rotation from the bottom roller of a hay conditioner to the top roller of the hay conditioner. The top and bottom rollers include longitudinally extending flutes which intermesh as the rollers rotate. The top roller is mounted for movement at each end upwardly away from the bottom roller to accommodate increased quantities of crop or obstacles. The chain drive maintains angular synchronism between the rollers despite movement of the top roller away from the bottom roller. This is achieved using a single chain wrapped around a drive sprocket on the bottom roller and around two idlers arranged at the apexes of a triangle. The driven sprocket on the top roller is located within the triangle so that the chain wraps around the drive roller into the triangle, around the driven roller and back to the idler at the apex. The top roller is mounted for pivotal movement about an axis midway between the idler sprocket and the drive sprocket and located just outside a line joining the axes of those sprockets. This location of the pivot point and the proper selection of the length of the pivot arm maintains the chain path constant despite the movement of the roller and maintains the required angular synchronism.

Accordingly, the silver skin can be ensured to be removed from the individual green coffee beans.

    • A pretreatment system for wheat to be floured comprises a plurality of friction type wheat polishing machines disposed in series relation to form a continuous wheat polishing process line. Each polishing machine includes a perforated tubular polishing member mounted on a frame and a frictionally polishing roll rotatably mounted on the frame. The polishing roll is disposed with the polishing member and cooperates therewith to define therebetween a polishing chamber. Upon the rotation of the polishing roll, it causes wheat grains supplied into the polishing chamber to be agitated and brought into frictional contact with each other to strip a pericarp from each wheat grain, to thereby polish the same. A moisture supplying device supplies moisture to the polishing chamber of at least one of the polishing machines, to add the moisture to the wheat grains flowing within the polishing chamber, to thereby increase a frictional contact force between the wheat grains. The friction between the wheat grains by the polishing roll causes each wheat grain to be moisturized and softened, to thereby facilitate the stripping of the pericarp from each wheat grain and the exposure of an endosperm part thereof. A wheat flouring system comprises the above pretreatment system and a milling and screening system. The milling and screening system comprises at least one milling machine for milling the wheat grains each having the endosperm part exposed to form a powder material, and at least one screening machine for screening the powder material to provide wheat flour having a desired particle size.

The present invention also includes structure for feeding 2-50 kg of water per hour and 12-90 m.sup.3 air per hour to intermediately polished rice grains that are flowing at a rate of one ton per hour whereby moisture of 0.1-2.0 weight percent to the rice grains, weight is absorbed and stuck onto surfaces of the rice grains during friction-polishing. The disclosed rice polishing apparatus includes a grinding-type polishing machine provided with grinding type polishing rolls and a humidified friction-type polishing machine provided with friction type polishing rolls and humidifying device.
