    • The present invention relates to an inertization process for decreasing a risk of fire and for extinguishing fires in a protected room, wherein an oxygen concentration in the protected room is first lowered to a specific base inertization level, and wherein the oxygen concentration in the protected room is maintained at the base inertization level. In the event of a fire, additional inert gas is introduced based upon the extent of the fire in the protected room to further decrease from the base inertization level to a first lowered level. The oxygen concentration is maintained at the first lowered level for a first preset time interval, and further decreased from the first lowered level to a full inertization level, if the fire has not yet been extinguished once the first preset time interval has elapsed.

The sensor may be a slidable member or an actuatable lever, for example, that detects movement of the apparatus along or away from a support surface, and actuates an adjuster to restrict the flow of fluid until the forces are balanced and the apparatus stops moving relative to the support surface.

    • Systems, methods and aspect thereof for a fire protection system including a releasing control panel. In one aspect a fire protection system for a residential unit as defined in the 2002 Edition of the National Fire Protection Association Standard 13, 13D and 13R having at least one dwelling is provided. The fire protection system preferably includes a liquid supply source along a main line and a network of pipes in communication with the dwelling. The system includes at least one sprinkler in the network to discharge a fluid within about fifteen seconds of sprinkler activation. In addition, the system includes at least one fire control panel disposed between the main line and the pipe network to control release of a fire fighting fluid under various control modes. The system further include at least one fire detector disposed in the at least one dwelling and in communication with the at least one fire control panel. In one aspect of the preferred system is sectional control to the first and at least a second dwelling.

    • A sprinkler system comprises a network of CPVC conduits and a plurality of sprinklers. The system includes an electrically activated solenoid control valve to allow fluid to flow in the pipe network. One or more fire detectors operate independently of the condition of the sprinklers. Upon detection of an incipient fire situation, a fire detector sends an electrical signal to cause activation of the control valve. Upon activation of the control valve, fire suppression fluid is caused to flow through the conduits before the incipient fire situation matures into a sprinkler-triggering event. The cooling effect of fluid flowing through the conduit enables the conduit to resist structural failure prior to sprinkler deployment. The control valve may be disposed at a remote location in the sprinkler line and be operable as part of an inspector's test connection.

    • In an automatic on-off sprinkler, water enters an inlet and passes through a hollow interior region to the outlet. A reciprocating member in the hollow region normally blocks the outlet when water entering a narrow passageway fills a central chamber above the reciprocating member. A large gap between the hollow region ID and the reciprocating member OD permits friction-free movement of the reciprocating member. A flexible, water-tight diaphragm seals the central region, preventing liquid entering the narrow passageway from communicating with a lower region from passing to the outlet. A sensor detects an emergency condition, unsealing a control opening larger than the narrow passageway, allowing liquid to rapidly escape through the unsealed control, dropping the pressure in the central region, whereby a pressure imbalance lifts the reciprocating member closing the outlet. When the control opening is resealed, liquid pressure in the central region sealed by the water-tight membrane increases. The internal pressure urges the reciprocating member to the closed position when the central region is filled, which condition is maintained during normal temperature conditions. The flexible water-tight diaphragm eliminates the need for O-ring seals which create undesirable frictional forces. The reciprocating member may be spherical or cylindrical and may be formed of a suitable metal or other material. A light closing spring may be provided to normally urge the spool to the closed position. The control valve may be used to control two or more conventional sprinkler heads.
