摘要： A set top terminal is disclosed for creating a favorites menu of television programs available for viewing, based on a user's preferences. The terminal receives a television signal from an operations center, extracts individual programs from the signal, and sends one or more of the individual programs to a television for display, based on a selection by the user. The terminal generates an interactive electronic program guide for the selection of programs. The favorites menu of the guide narrows the list of available programs to those most likely of interest to the user. The terminal receives and stores user information, including general demographic information and viewing preference information. The viewing preference information may be received directly from the user, for example by querying the user. Alternatively, it may be learned by tracking the user's viewing habits. The viewing preference information may include, for example, frequently-watched channels, frequently-watched programs, or information related to program content. The user information may be stored in a user profile. Using the user information, the terminal identifies those programs available for viewing that most closely match the user information. A program menu including the identified programs is then generated for display on a television.

摘要： The invention, an electronic book selection and delivery system, is a new way to distribute books and other textual information to bookstores, libraries and consumers. The primary components of the system are a subsystem for placing text in a video signal format and a subsystem for receiving and selecting text that is placed in the video signal format. The system configuration for consumer use contains additional components and optional features that enhance the system, namely: (1) an operations center, (2) a video distribution system, (3) a home subsystem, including reception, selection, viewing, transacting and transmission capabilities, and (4) a billing and collection system. The operations center and/or video distribution points perform the functions of manipulation of text data, security and coding of text, cataloging of books, messaging center, and uplink functions. The electronic books may be provided to an intermediate point such as a library or a bookstore. From the library or bookstore, electronic books may be provided to consumers for viewing on the home subsystem. The library may store electronic books for lending on a file server. The library may incorporate security features to prevent unauthorized copying of the electronic books, such as including a time out feature that disables the electronic book after a specified period.

摘要： Methods and apparatus for selectively caching (and de-caching) video content in network so as to reduce content transformation requirements and also cache storage requirements. In one embodiment, a content caching controller associated with a content server differentiates content requests based on content attributes such as the requested codec format (e.g., MPEG or Windows Media), resolution, bitrate, and/or encryption type or security environment. If the content requested by a user is not available with the requested attribute(s), the content server transfers to content to the user by first transforming it. The content server also speculatively caches the transformed content locally, so that a future request for the same content with the same attributes can be filled by transferring without the intermediate transformation step. The controller allows the network operator to optimize use of available storage and transcoding resources.

摘要： A method acquires compressed videos. Intra-, or inter-frames of each compressed video are acquired at a fixed sampling rate. Joint analysis is applied concurrently and in parallel to the compressed videos to determine a variable and non-uniform temporal sampling rate for each compressed video so that a combined distortion is minimized and a combined frame rate constraint is satisfied. Each compressed video is then sampled at the associated variable and non-uniform temporal sampling rate to produce output compressed videos having variable temporal resolutions.
