    • Disclosed techniques limit or reduce the amount of data for which a subscriber may be charged that may not actually be received at the subscriber's mobile device. A counter may be started when a node has data to be delivered to a mobile device. The node may send the data through a radio access network for delivery to the mobile device and record an amount of the data sent for the mobile device through the radio access network for data usage billing purposes while running the counter, until the counter reaches a predetermined value. When the counter reaches the predetermined value, if no traffic channel has been set up with the mobile device, the node will stop recording the amount of the data sent for the mobile device through the radio access network for data usage billing purposes.

    • A call hibernation method may include releasing resources allocated to a first call between a calling party and a called party in response to a hibernate message from the called party. The hibernate message may indicate to hibernate the first call, and/or the hibernate message may include reestablishment information for reestablishing communication between the calling party and the called party. A second call may be established between the calling party and the called party in response to a deactivate-hibernated message from the called party. The deactivate-hibernated message may indicate the called party desires to reestablish communication with the calling party, and/or the deactivate-hibernated message may include at least a portion of the reestablishment information.

    • A method and system for processing a prepaid call in a mobile telecommunications network wherein charges can be recovered for the call after the SCP and Prepaid Platform lose contact with the MSC or GMSC handling the call. A Trigger Detection Point known as “O-Disconnect” or “T-Disconnect” can be armed in a prepaid subscriber's HLR and can be triggered when the MSC/GMSC loses contact with the SCP. The MSC/GMSC can record the time that the TDP was triggered in memory. The MSC/GMSC can then monitor for call disconnect and record the disconnection time in memory. When the call is disconnected the MSC/GMSC can renew contact with the SCP. MSC/GMSC can identify the call using a unique call identifier and advise the SCP of the times at which contact was lost and the call was disconnected. The SCP can use this information to calculate a charge for the portion of the call that occurred after contact with the MSC/GMSC was lost so that the entire call can be charged in near real-time.

    • According to one embodiment of the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for use in a communication network for performing reverse charge calling. The apparatus comprises a reverse charging element operable for: receiving a request from a first subscriber to establish a reverse charge call with a second subscriber, the request including an identifier of the first and second subscribers on the network; establishing a call with the second subscriber; sending a call establishment request to a service control element to establish a call with the first subscriber, the request including a predetermined identifier identifiable by the service control element; the service control element being further operable for: detecting the presence of the predetermined identifier in a call establishment request message: informing the second subscriber that a reverse charge call has been requested along with the determined cost of the call; and completing the call with the first subscriber upon obtaining authorization to accept the reverse charge call from the second subscriber.

    • Disclosed is a method for reducing the load of Traffic Plane Function (TPF). According to the obtained indication on whether to perform charging, the TPF determines whether to perform charging operation for the service data flow using appropriate charging rules, if yes, the TPF performs the charging operation for the counting result of the service data flow and submits the charging information to the charging associated entities; otherwise, the TPF does not perform the charging operation for the counting result of the service data flow. Operation in the TPF is optimized such that the TPF only needs to perform necessary charging instead of performing charging operation for the service data flow not needing to be charged. As a result, the load of the TPF and network devices are reduced, system efficiency is improved, and waste of network resources from various operator charging policies, e.g., free of charge policy, is avoided.
