    • In a first aspect this invention discloses methods and apparatus for operating a radio link protocol receiver when receiving data blocks from a transmitter. The method includes receiving a data block and making a determination as to whether the size of a receive window is less than or equal to a bitmap size, where the bitmap size is the maximum size, in bits, of the bitmap to be reported in an acknowledgment message. If the determination is positive, then the reported bitmap covers the entire receive window, while if the determination is negative the reported bitmap covers only the beginning of the receive window and covers as many blocks as there are bits in the reported bitmap. In a second aspect this invention a method includes making a determination as to whether the size of the receive window is less than or equal to the bitmap size, and, if the determination is positive, the reported bitmap covers the entire receive window, while if the determination is negative, either a first partial bitmap covering an initial portion of the receive window is reported, or a next partial bitmap covering some portion other than the initial portion of the receive window is reported.

    • A system, apparatus, and method for providing secure loss recovery for packet loss due to bit errors and other non-congestion-related packet loss occurring over the communication link. An intermediary node in a network between a sending node and a receiving node identifies packet loss due to bit errors (PLB), or other non-congestion-based packet loss, over a network connection between the sending module and the network node. A loss notification signal is sent from the network node to the sending module in response to identification of the non-congestion-based packet loss. The PLB is verified at the sending module. A first loss recovery procedure is performed, different from a second loss recovery procedure associated with congestion-based packet loss, if the PLB is verified at the sending module.

    • In a wireline or wireless telecommunications system or data network, which employs a Selective Repeat Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) to convey data packet reception status for a sequence of data packets grouped together into a number of blocks of data packets, partial bit mapping is employed to improve efficiency, particularly with respect to bandwidth. This may be accomplished, more specifically, by including in the ARQ message that is sent from the receiver to the sender, a number of partial bitmaps, along with a corresponding number of bitmap block numbers, where a first bitmap block number identifies a particular one of the blocks of data packets and the corresponding bitmap defines the reception status of the data packets in that block. Each of the remaining bitmap block numbers identify an additional block of data packets relative to the first block of data packets. Accordingly, the remaining bitmap block numbers require fewer bits to identify their corresponding data packet blocks.
