    • An apparatus for testing an implant having first and second components coupled together by an articulating ball and socket joint includes a support structure in contact with the first component of the implant for supporting said implant, an adapter coupled to the second component of the implant, and a load assembly in contact with the adapter for applying a load onto a semispherical surface of the adapter. The apparatus includes a drive assembly coupled with the adapter having a first drive shaft having a first end connected with a center of a rotatable wheel and a second drive shaft having a first end connected with an outer region of the wheel and a second end connected to the adapter. The second drive shaft has a longitudinal axis that is at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the first drive shaft. In operation, rotation of the first drive shaft about the longitudinal axis thereof causes articulating movement of the adapter, which in turn causes articulating movement of the first and second components of the implant under load.

    • Disclosed is a system for measuring mechanical properties of a deformable material specimen. The system includes a first gripping device for removably securing a first end of the specimen, a second gripping device for removably securing a second end of the specimen and an image acquisition device for producing image data reflective of a specified area of the specimen. Either the first gripping device or the second gripping device is movable in a first direction and in communication with the displacement measurement mechanism, which produces displacement data. The first gripping device or the second gripping device is also in communication with the load measurement mechanism for producing load data. Also disclosed is a method for measuring the mechanical properties of a deformable material specimen.

    • A mechanical testing device has a rigid frame and a piezo translator connected to the frame. A Wheatstone bridge is connected to the translator to produce an electrical signal related to the compression of the translator, wherein a sample positioned between the piezo translator and the frame is subjected to loads by the movement of the translator. A sensor detects the force applied to the sample by the piezo translator, and produces a signal indicative of the force. A computer receives the Wheatstone bridge electrical signal and the signal indicative of the force applied to the sample. The computer controls the advancement of the translator to allow the application of precise amounts of compression to the sample.

    • The condition of hair or other keratin fibers can be evaluated by measuring the force required to obtain a first value of elongation of the fiber in the yield region of the force-elongation curve, and the force required to obtain a second value of elongation of the fiber in the yield region. The ratio of these two measured forces is then determined as a damage index for the fiber. It is found that a constant force ratio is obtained for wet virgin keratin fiber independent of fiber diameter or the source of the fiber. It is also found that the force ratio changes as a function of subjective or objective measures of chemical damage to the hair fiber. The force ratio or damage index can, therefore, be used for identifying hair care products suitable for application to the hair without inducing unacceptable damage. The tests may be performed with simple tensile testing apparatus without tedious examination of the hair under a microscope.
