    • A pneumatic traction device is provided which includes a pneumatic cylinder having a patient engaging device mounted to a pneumatic piston slidably positioned in the pneumatic cylinder. The pneumatic cylinder in turn is connected to a mounting device which can be mounted to a wall, for example. Compressed air, provided by a motor driven compressor, is directed on a timed basis to a chamber on one side of the pneumatic piston to move the pneumatic piston in a direction which pulls on the patient engaging device to provide traction to the patient. An electrically controllable relief valve is also provided by which the compressed air in the pneumatic cylinder can be bled into the atmosphere when the relief valve is opened. A controllable switch is provided for selectably controlling the operation of the compressor and relief valve.

    • According to the present invention there is provided a portable traction apparatus including a table having a head end and a foot and including a generally rectangular panel adapted to be placed in a horizontal position. A traction exerting mechanism is mounted to the table and includes an extension linkage assembly fixed to the table and including articulated pivotally interconnected links, an elongate upper end member connected at an inner end to the linkage assembly and having an outer end extending outwardly of the head end of the table and or, an elongate lower end member having an inner end connected to the linkage assembly and an outer end extending outwardly of the foot end of the table and, first and second lever arms pivotally connected to and forming part of the linkage assembly, each lever arm having an outer end extending outwardly from one side of the table and having arm engaging means at the outer end of each lever arm. The lever arms are movable from and to a non-traction exerting position near the head end of the table where one or two elongate end members are in a retracted position within the table and a second position toward the foot end of the table where the extension linkage assembly is extended by the movement of the lever arms so as to extend one or two elongate end members to which body engaging means can be attached for applying traction to a user/patient lying on the table.

    • A compact cervical traction apparatus having a carriage which is slidably disposed over a base, the carriage carrying a head support band. A pair of springs that provide a uniform traction force over the entire range of carriage movement are enclosed within a spring housing at the rear of the base. The springs are constant force springs and an uncoiled portion of the first spring is disposed below an uncoiled portion of the second spring. The uncoiled portion of the first spring is attached to a Z-shaped member having an elongated trailing end that is mounted to the carriage so as to bias the carriage. The uncoiled portion of the second spring is attached to a lip member that is disposed to securely fit within the Z-shaped member and thereby combine the traction force of the second spring to that of the first spring. An L-shaped disengaging plate has a portion which passes between the uncoiled portions of the springs proximate attachment of the lip member to the Z-shaped member. The disengaging plate also has a cam surface portion. Pressure applied to the cam surface portion causes the disengaging portion of the plate to separate the lip member and the Z-shaped member sufficiently to prevent coupling. Such pressure is selectively supplied by a cam pivotably secured to the spring housing. The constant force springs each provide a traction force of four pounds to the carriage.
