    • A highly automated method and system for providing individual animal electronic identification, measurement and value based management of cattle in a large cattle feedlot. Through the use of (1) a computer system integrated with (2) automatic individual animal identification (3) multiple measurement and remeasurement systems with automatic data input and (4) a cattle handling and sorting system, animals are individually (a) identified and (b) measured by weight, external dimensions and characteristics of internal body tissue. With this information together with animal physiological characteristics and historical data, the computer system calculates the optimum (c) slaughter weight, (d) economic end point and (e) marketing date for shipment to a packing plant. After measurement, individual animals are (f) sorted by direction of the computer in response to calculations from the measurements. The computer system also calculates from individual animal data and other data (g) each animal's pro rata share of total feed intake for the animal's feed group. The computer system (h) stores individual animal measurement, performance and location data, which is used by management to (i) select animals for shipment from the feedlot for slaughter at the optimum time. Following an animal's shipment to a slaughter facility, its identification in the computer system is used to (j) correlate the live animal physical characteristics and performance data to the measured and evaluated carcass characteristics data obtained during the slaughter process and (k) build a data base to more accurately identify and measure value-based characteristics in subsequent animals produced and fed for more effective value-based selection and management of those animals.

    • In a hog production plant the hogs are divided into a series of separate pens within the hog plant based generally on weight such that the lightest hogs closest to the initial weight are arranged in the first pen when the arrive and the heaviest hogs closest to the final market weight are arranged in the last pen. Each pen includes a sorting scale arranged to receive a hog therein and to weigh the hog for selection of one of two outlet paths leading to the next pen of the series or, in respect of the last pen, to a discharge location. A control unit for the system is arranged such that a required number of hogs to be removed from the last of the pens for market, the required number being less than the total number of hogs in the last pen and less than the total number of hogs in each of the other pens of the series is set and the sorter operated to remove the required number of hogs from the last pen and to transfer from each pen to the next of the series substantially the same number so as to maintain the numbers of hogs in the pens substantially constant. The sorter can also be used to sort the heaviest hogs into a pen where their feed is periodically and repeatedly withheld to slow their growth relative to pens of average and lightest hogs.

    • A pig pen structure has a walking passage and a plurality of pig houses for housing an animal installed along the walking passage. Each pig house has an evacuation room, a lodging room having front, back, and two side walls, and an evacuation room gate installed between the evacuation room and the lodging room. The evacuation room is accessible to the animal for excretion when the evacuation room gate is opened. The evacuation room gate when closed becomes a part of the back wall. A urine tube is installed on the bottom of the evacuation room, so that the excreted urine in the evacuation room flows down to the urine tube to remove the excreted urine outside the pig house. The plurality of the pig houses is arranged so that the front walls of the pig houses adjoin the walking passage. A continuous passage way is formed by the evacuation rooms along the back wall of the lodging room when the evacuation room gates of the pig houses are in closed position.

    • A highly automated hog management system and method for housing, feeding and sorting hogs comprising a finishing barn partitioned into two separate pens each capable of holding at least 400 hogs in a large open area, with each room having a living or pen area and central shared but divided feeding area, such that through the adjustment of a gating and fencing system enclosing the feeding area, two pens of hogs can be sorted using a single electronic sorting scale, and wherein hogs are made to sort themselves by weight upon passing through the electronic sorting scale, which designates the animals as either light or heavy, and whereafter a diversion gate ushers them either into the regular feeding area with access back to the living area if they are designated as “light,” or into a separate holding pen if they are designated as “heavy. In addition, light and heavy hogs can be sorted between pens rather than in each pen separately. A sick pen area at each end of the building, having its own feed and water supply, is also provided.

    • An animal in a pen is fed by a drop tube from a raised supply system to a position at or adjacent the floor or a trough at the floor. A spout at the bottom of the drop tube extends at an angle to the tube for discharging the feed in a direction to one side of the drop tube depending upon an angular orientation of the drop tube about a vertical axis of the drop tube. A clamp for attaching the drop tube to the wall of the pen includes co-operating indexing adjustment components including a stud mounted on the tube and grooves in the top surface of the clamping band which can be adjusted to provide a plurality of indexed angular orientations of the tube about the axis for locating the direction of discharge of the spout at specific indexed locations relative to the trough.
