摘要： A closed loop postage metering system includes networked meters that provide mailers and/or recipients the capability to request additional or modified services during processing of a mail piece by a carrier. The networked meter allows the Post to charge the mailer, or even the recipient for these services or to provide them with a refund or credit. The services can include changing the processing of the mail piece. Further, the closed loop postage metering system enables more precise methods of paying for services when multiple carriers handle a mail piece. A special case of such multiple carriers handling is the handling of international mail.

A machine-readable block of control information that instructs computer-driven actuators what to do with the business reply mail document itself, its digital image (or parts of thereof) and the data elements contained in the document, based on selections made by the recipient, is provided on the business reply mail piece. A scanner module scans the business reply mail piece to read the selection made by the recipient and the corresponding instructions from the block of control information. A control module interprets the data to provide instructions for the processing of the business reply mail piece based on the recipient's selection.

摘要： A mailing list is created including destination addresses for mailpieces to be submitted to a carrier service for delivery. A unique mailpiece identifier associated with mailpieces on the mailing list is generated by the carrier or other trusted third party. The unique mailpiece identifier is printed on the mailpiece with which it is associated. The -mailpieces with the printed unique identifier are submitted to the carrier service. The carrier service obtains the printed unique identifier from the mailpiece. The obtained unique identifier from each said mailpiece is utilized to verify that data associated with the mailpiece has been processed by the carrier or trusted third party. When the unique number has been obtained from the mailpieces, the carrier service, if desired, may note this fact in the carrier records to prevent reuse of the unique identifier. The carrier service as part of issuing the unique identification may: charge the mailer's account of other fund depository for the carrier service charges associated with the mailpiece; and/or, assign a destination delivery code; and/or, provide address hygiene for the mailpiece; and/or change of address processing. When the unique identifier is obtained from the mailpiece, a delivery point destination code may be printed on the mailpiece, based on the corrected address. As an alternative, the destination delivery code may be provided to the mailer with the unique mailpiece identifier to be printed on the mailpiece by the mailer. Various cryptographic techniques may be employed to authenticate the mailer and the carrier service and to protect the transmitted information between the parties. The payment for the carrier services can be implemented prior in time to the entry of the mailpieces to the carrier service mailstream. Unauthorized mailpieces may be out sorted early in the carrier service processing procedure

The apparatus further comprises a controller for performing the following subsequent to manufacture of the first module and the second module: initiating a communication session between the first module and the second module; transmitting the unique identifier from the second module to the first module; and deriving the unique key in the first module using the unique identifier and the universal key. A method for synchronization of cryptographic keys between modules of a distributed system and a method of manufacturing a postage evidencing system are also provided.

摘要： A method for controlling keys used in the verification of encoded information generated by a transaction evidencing device and printed on a document comprises the steps of generating a plurality of random verifier master keys to obtain a set of verifier master keys consisting of a fixed number of keys; generating at least one pointer by applying a psuedorandom algorithm to data unique to the transaction evidencing device; calculating a plurality of verifier token keys to obtain a verifier token key set corresponding to the set of verifier master keys; encrypting the verifier token key set with a privacy key; and distributing the set verifier token keys and the privacy key to verifiers. The token keys are a function of the verifier master keys and a code valid for a limited time. The pointer algorithm is an appropriate symmetric key cryptographic algorithm and the code is function of a date dependent parameter. The master keys are distributed to postal and vendor data centers.

摘要： The present invention provides a method for verifying an unreadable information-based indium that has been generated by a postal security device (PSD) for information-based indium comprising a 2-D bar code, certain human-readable information, a digital signature and a certificate. The method comprises the steps of attempting to read the 2-D bar code using sophisticated digital image processing when the 2-D bar code is not readable; and continuing normal processing when the 2-D bar code is readable with the sophisticated digital image processing. When the 2-D bar code is not readable two independent processes are used to determine the indicium certificate. A first process includes reading human readable information by optical character recognition using context, syntax, and redundancy in the human readable information to obtain a PSD-ID; and using the PSD-ID to look up in a certificate database a certificate corresponding to the information-based indicium. A second process includes interpreting partial bar code data and extracting a "best guess" of the certificate and searching the certificate database for the closest matching certificate. The method further comprises merging data obtained from the two processes and attempting to reconstruct bar code data from the merged data. If the merged data is sufficient, an attempt is made to verify the digital signature obtained from the merged data. If the signature is verified, normal processing is resumed. If the merged data is insufficient or if the signature is not verified, a suspect mailpiece record is created.

Received from the data center is a mailing list including addressed hygiened recipient address information and a digital token for each mailpiece with encrypted data. The encrypted data is based on the corrected address information for mailpieces with correct address information on the transmitted mailing list and on hygiened recipient address information the mailpieces with incorrect recipient address information on the transmitted mailing list. The digital tokens for each mailpiece may also be based on the rating parameter information.Selection is provided for utilizing a given one of the incorrect recipient address information and the correct recipient address information is applied to an encrypter generating the digital tokens. The encrypting means for generating digital tokens may be located remote from the mailer facility or on a mailer facility or other local area network. Various arrangements are employed in generating and printing digital tokens recipient address information and corrected recipient address information.

摘要： A transaction evidencing system and method includes a host processor and an unsecured printer coupled to the host processor. A vault device that includes digital token generation and transaction accounting functions is operatively coupled to the host processor. The vault device generates a digital token in response to a first command from the host processor. The digital token and information relating thereto are stored in storage area in the vault and/or the host processor. The stored digital token and information relating thereto are selectively accessed for generating transaction evidencing indicia corresponding to the stored digital token. The unsecured printing structure prints the transaction evidencing indicia in response to a second command which is issued at a time subsequent to the first command. A batch of digital tokens may be generated and stored in an indexed file in the storage area before any indicia corresponding to the batch of digital tokens are generated and printed. The host processor may be a personal computer and the vault device may be a portable vault card that is removably coupled to the personal computer. The information related to the digital token is postal information including piece count, postage amount and addressee information and the indexed file is indexed according to addressee information.
