    • An ultrafiltration filter for an extracorporeal blood circuit having an input for blood withdrawn from a human patient and a blood output for filtered blood to be infused into the patient including: a filter body having a length of at least 20 centimeters (cm) and an interior diameter of no greater than 1.5 cm; an input at a first end of the body to receive the withdrawn blood; an output at a second end of the body to discharge the filtered blood; a filter membrane in the body defining a blood passage through the body, wherein the membrane has an active filter membrane surface area of no greater than 0.2 meters squared (m2) and the filter membrane blocks passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight cut of greater than 60,000 Daltons and a volume of the blood passage in the filter being less than two percent of a cardiac output of the patient, and an ultrafiltrate output to the body and open to a side of the filter surface area opposite to the blood passage.

    • A method for treating congestive heart failure (CHF) has been developed that restores kidney renal functions by artificially perfusion of at least one kidney. The kidney is perfused with the patient's blood or other suitable perfusion fluid. A catheter inserted into the aorta of the patient has a distal end that supplies the perfusion fluid into a renal artery of the patient. The catheter may be coupled to an implanted blood pump or to an external supply of perfusion pressure. The restoration of kidney function assists the heart by removing excess fluid, urine and toxin from the patient, and by normalizing the patient's renin-angiotensin system and other neurohormonal substances. The method is applicable to treat chronic and acute CHF.

    • A cardiac support system includes a ventricular assist device adapted to be extended over a portion of a patient's heart to assist the ventricles of the heart to properly contract. One or more stimulating electrodes are mounted on the ventricular assist device in selected locations such that when the ventricular assist device is extended over the heart, the stimulation electrodes are in close proximity to the surface of the heart. The system further includes one or more external pick-up electrodes that receive externally applied energy and conduct that energy to the one or more stimulating electrodes via conductive leads. The external pick-up electrodes may be mounted on the outer surface of the ventricular assist device, or can be located at some other location inside the patient's body. The externally-applied energy will typically be supplied by standard defibrillation paddles located outside of the patient's body. In place of the pick-up electrodes, the stimulating electrodes can be wired directly to, respectively, a source of electrical energy and a ground plate.
