    • A flapper valve assembly is described having an equalizing port assembly with a bleed valve member that is moveable between an open position and a closed position. The equalizing port assembly features a structural support member in the form of a retainer key that is secured to the flapper valve member both axially and radially. Additionally, a compressible spring is located between the structural support member and provides biasing force upon the valve member to urge it toward a closed position. Additionally, the flapper valve member presents a pair of raised, substantially flat actuator contact portions upon its downstream face to meet an actuating tube in a mating contact arrangement and resist material deformation that could tend to clog or block the equalizing fluid flow port.

    • The invention provides techniques and devices for treating atherosclerotic disease using controlled cryogenic cooling, often in combination with angioplusty. The efficacy of endolusninal cryogenic cooling is enhanced by cooling of target tissues using an insulated cryogenic balloon, the lnsulation ideally comprising a fluid which undergoes a phase change at a predetermined temperature. A combination cryogenic/angioplasty catheter avoids exchange procedures between dilation of a stenotic region within a vessel wall and the application of cryogenic cooling. The combination angioplasty/cryogenic cooling catheter may cool the diseased blood vessel before, during, and/or after dilation. Controlled cooling of the vessel wall may change its mechanical properties, weakening the vessel and allowing it to be expanded at a much lower pressure than with conventional uncooled angioplasty. Similar reductions in restenosis may be provided for other primary treatments of the blood vessel, including directional arthrectomy, rotational arthrectomy, laser angioplasty, stenting, and the like.

    • A torsion spring return system for a valve closure member, preferably for downhole use in an SSV, is described. The closure member or flapper uses torsion springs which can be wrapped circumferentially within the body of the downhole tool, generally following the periphery of the flapper. Downward rotation of the flapper stresses the torsion springs so that subsequently, when a flow tube or other device holding the flapper in one position is released, the torsion springs return the flapper to its seat. The connection between the torsion springs and the pin supporting the flapper is either a universal joint or involves an alignment rod running through the torsion spring, as well as other mechanisms which facilitate stress relief in the connection between the torsion spring and pivot pin.
