    • A device for detecting substances in a liquid film by measuring chemiluminescence, fluorescence or absorption using techniques such as flow-injection analysis schemes, liquid chromatographies, and gas chromatographies. The device can be used as a micro-volume mixing or reaction substrate for a variety of measurements. The device comprises at least two film supports that are separated by a small gap. One or more applicators are positioned along the gap to supply fluids to the gap. The applicators are positioned near the gap at a spacing that is near the necking length of the fluid supplied by the applicator. A thin, continuous film of the mixture of fluids to be examined is supported in the gap between the film supports. The film extends through the examining chamber and through drop and overflow detection probes. Also disclosed is a mixing or reaction chamber which comprises an enclosable mainframe into which a plurality of applicators are butted near a gap defined between two film supports. The chamber communicates with an inlet port and an exit port for controlling the pressure and other aspects of the environment in the chamber.

    • An apparatus is disclosed for monitoring the movement and force production of the lumbar spine during flexion and extension in each of several sagittal-frontal planes of the body, as well as during movement into he transverse (twisting) plane. The apparatus includes a rotatable platform upon which the patient is adapted to stand, and the platform is pivotable about a vertical axis, so that the platform may be pivoted to a selected angle and locked in position. A pelvic stabilization belt is mounted to the platform, and an overhead frame member is provided for rotation about a horizontal axis which is adapted to pass through the lumbro-sacral junction of the patient. An upper body yoke is mounted to the overhead frame member for rotation about a generally vertical axis which is perpendicular to the horizontal axis. An upper body engaging member is mounted to the yoke, and a control system is provided whereby the apparatus may be operated in a flexion/extension mode, or in a twisting mode, and with the foot platform in a selected angular position.

    • An improved ink suitable for use in ink-jet printers is provided. The ink includes (a) a vehicle comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of water and a water-soluble, non-aqueous component, and (b) an anionic dye having cations associated therewith. The ink composition is characterized by further including a macrocyclic polyether associated with the cations, the macrocyclic polyether having binding sites and a cavity size suitable for complexing the cations. The ink composition of the invention evidences reduced crusting, increased fade resistance and, for use in thermal ink-jet printers, reduced kogation.

    • A tilt mechanism for tilting a cathode-ray tube viewing screen on which information is electronically displayed is disclosed. The screen is hingedly secured to a planar base for tilting from a vertical position in which it is substantially balanced through positions of progressively increased tilt in which the weight of the tube and associated parts becomes progressively displaced and the screen becomes more unbalanced. A camming bracket, pivotally mounted to the tube is spring urged into engagement with an abutment fixed relative to the base by a spring. The cam and the spring interact to counterbalance the viewing screen at all positions of tilt of the screen.

    • A multiferroic element may include a substrate formed on an electrically conductive ground plane. The substrate may be formed from a material having a predetermined elastic modulus. A layer of piezoelectric material may be formed on the substrate. A layer of magnetostrictive material may be bonded to the layer of piezoelectric material. A mechanical strain is created in the layer of piezoelectric material in response to a voltage signal being applied to the multiferroic element. The mechanical strain in the layer of piezoelectric material causes a mechanical strain in the layer of magnetostrictive material to produce a radio frequency magnetic field that is proportional to the voltage signal for generating a radio frequency electromagnetic wave. The predetermined elastic modulus of the substrate is substantially lower than an elastic modulus of the layer of piezoelectric material.
