    • A method and system for reducing power consumption in a display includes driving a display comprising a plurality of display elements characterized by a display state. In a first mode of operation, the display state of substantially all the display elements is periodically re-set so as to display a first series of image frames. Upon changing to a second mode of operation, a second mode of operations comprises re-setting the display state of only a portion of the display elements so as to display a second series of image frames at a display element resolution which is less than said display element resolution used to display said first series of image frames.

    • A light modulator device includes a first electrical conduit, a second electrical conduit electrically isolated from the first conduit, a first display element, and a second display element. The first display element is in an actuated state when a voltage difference between the first conduit and the second conduit has a magnitude greater than a first actuation voltage and is in a released state when the voltage difference has a magnitude less than a first release voltage. The second display element is in an actuated state when the voltage difference has a magnitude greater than a second actuation voltage and is in a released state when the voltage difference has a magnitude less than a second release voltage. Either the actuation voltages are substantially equal and the release voltages are different, or the actuation voltages are different and the release voltages are substantially equal.

    • A first device includes a processor, a first memory, and a memory manager.     • A method and device for increasing the effective horizontal resolution of a display device. One embodiment forms a cardinal array of digital micromirror elements by staggering alternate rows in an array. According to a second embodiment, an ordinal pixel array 57, is converted to a cardinal pixel array, by grouping SLM elements 59, 61, 63, and 65 into a pixel block 58. All of the elements in a pixel block are controlled in unison such that the pixel block acts like a single pixel. Rows of pixel blocks 67 and 69 are offset to provide the effect of a cardinal array of pixels without the decrease in efficiency sometimes associated with cardinal pixel arrays.
