    • In a method for the continuous automated manufacture of stuffed food casings containing imprinted labels, wherein tubular material for the casings from a supply source is axially shirred into sections and the sections are stuffed with food emulsion into divided off portions, the improvement comprising measuring linear motion of the casing as the portions are filled with food emulsion; inputting the measured motion to a programmable logic controller; within the programmable logic controller, calculating an approximate distance between eye-mark bars separating the individual portions, where the calculation is based upon a known distance between eye-mark bars; based upon the calculated approximate distance and the measured motion, selectively sensing eye-mark bars which separate individual casings while ignoring printed label material between eye-mark bars; and, clipping individual sections of the casing closed at precise locations in response to the sensing of eye-mark bars to accurately position the labels between end-clips secured to ends of each of the portions.

    • A machine for making a package of food casing strands, wherein the package has a hexagonal-like cross section, comprising a product holder for initially holding a plurality of the strands in a configuration having a hexagonal-like cross section, wherein the holder has an opening therein for admitting the strands into the holder; means for transporting the strands to the holder and for depositing the strands into the opening; shaker means for shaking the holder at predetermined times to ensure that the plurality of strands settle into the holder in the configuration having a hexagonal-like cross section; means for measuring and cutting a predetermined amount of stretch film, where the stretch film is a closed loop used to encase the package of food casing strands; means for stretching and holding the stretch film into a shape of a polygon having a perimeter which is larger than the perimeter of the holder; means for moving the stretched film into a position proximate the holder; means for pushing all of the strands out of the holder and into the stretched closed loop of film; and, means for releasing the stretched film, wherein the film then relaxes about the plurality of strands to form the package of food casing strands.

    • This invention relates to an improvement to a process for synthesizing cellulose aminomethanate which comprises slurrying cellulose in an aqueous caustic solution, in the presence of urea; steeping the slurried mixture for a time sufficient to permit swelling of the cellulose for uniform distribution of the urea; concentrating the steeped mixture and treating an extraction of the concentrate with an ion-exchanger. When cellulose aminomethanate is manufactured from product prepared in accord with this process, it has a uniform distribution of substituent throughout the cellulose at the molecular level and comprises a suitable product for manufacturing sausage casing.

    • This invention relates to an improvement to a process for synthesizing cellulose aminomethanate wherein cellulose is steeped in an aqueous urea containing solution, dried to form an intimate mixture of cellulose and urea of known composition, and heated to form the cellulose aminomethanate; the improvement comprising, heating the mixture to a temperature above about 125 degrees centigrade, measuring the weight loss of the mixture during heating, comparing the measured weight loss of the mixture during heating to the weight of an equivalent amount of ammonia released in accord with the reaction path:Cell-OH+CO(NH.sub.2).sub.2 .fwdarw.Cell-OCONH.sub.2 +NH.sub.3continuing heating until the total measured weight loss corresponds to the total weight of an amount of ammonia released in the reaction when from about 30 to about 100% of the total weight of urea present in the mixture reacts with cellulose. Cellulose aminomethanate manufactured in accord with this process, can be made having a uniform distributioon of substituent throughout the cellulose at the molecular level and comprises a consistently reproducable product for manufacturing sausage casing.
