    • A direct suction radial compressor having a crankcase therein dividing the compressor into an upper chamber and a lower chamber sealed one from the other, and suction inlet tubing extending through the top portion of the upper chamber for delivering refrigerant to the compressor. A suction chamber is disposed in the crankcase and sealed from the upper chamber and in communication with the suction inlet tubing, and a plurality of radially disposed cylinders are disposed in the crankcase. Positioned between the suction inlet and the cylinders is a centrifuging assembly that separates liquid refrigerant and oil from gaseous refrigerant, and returns the liquids through a unique network of passageways to an oil sump in the lower chamber. The centrifuging assembly is constructed so that the liquid refrigerant and oil are collected in a chamber having a pressure greater than the pressure in the lower chamber, thereby creating a pressure differential between the liquid containing chamber and oil sump in the lower chamber to force the collected liquids through a plurality of passageways communicating between the liquid collecting chamber and the lower chamber. The gaseous refrigerant is then delivered to a four cylinder scotch-yoke arrangement for compression and discharge to an external refrigerant cooler for cooling the compressed gas. The cooled gaseous refrigerant is then delivered to the upper chamber for cooling cylinder heads and ultimate discharge from the compressor. An oil pump assembly in the bottom of the lower chamber pumps the collected oil out of the compressor and through an oil cooler to cool the oil. The cooled oil is then returned to the oil pump assembly for delivery throughout the compressor to lubricate and cool components therein.

    • The invention provides an air cleaner assembly in combination with an engine having a blower housing with airflow circulating therethrough and a carburetor having an intake. The assembly comprises a duct having an inlet and an outlet with the inlet angularly disposed through the blower housing, an air cleaner housing having side walls and a bottom wall, and an outlet chamber having an inlet and an outlet in communication with the carburetor inlet. Within the air cleaner housing, a first interior wall is upstanding from the bottom wall and defines with certain side walls an intake chamber having an inlet communicating with the duct outlet, and a second interior wall upstanding from the bottom wall so that a filter chamber is formed between the interior walls having an outlet in its bottom wall so that the filter chamber and outlet chamber communicate through the filter chamber outlet and the outlet chamber inlet. The second interior wall and other side walls of the housing define a passageway in communication with the outlet chamber and the engine crankcase. Removably placed within the filter chamber is a filtering element, and removably attached to the air cleaner housing is a cover having side walls and a top wall such that the top wall is spaced above the filtering element to form therebetween a passageway, which provides communication between the intake chamber, filter chamber and passageway.

    • A hermetic refrigeration motor-compressor assembly includes a motor driving a compressor having suction and discharge ports. A hermetically sealed casing encloses the motor and compressor and has a gas inlet opening coupled by a conduit to the evaporator of the refrigeration system. A discharge conduit is coupled to the compressor discharge port and extends out of the casing to the condenser. The casing also encloses a suction muffler having a wall defining a chamber, the wall having inlet and outlet openings communicating with the chamber, the casing and muffler inlet openings being in closely spaced alignment to provide a semi-direct suction coupling. The muffler outlet opening is directly coupled to the compressor suction port. The wall of the muffler has another opening therein spaced from the inlet and outlet openings and communicating with the chamber. A passage in the muffler chamber extends between the inlet and other opening and has opposite ends respectively coupled thereto. The passage has a vent opening therein communicating with the chamber so that gas entering the passage through the muffler inlet opening flows outwardly through the vent opening into the chamber and then through the outlet opening to the compressor suction port whereas, a slug of liquid refrigerant flows through the passage and out of the other opening to the sump in the casing.

    • An automatic compression release mechanism for an internal combustion engine wherein first and second opposed cantilevered ends of a centrally supported flexible plate forms two independently operating valves to respectively control serially connected inlet and outlet ports of a valve chamber forming a part of a compression release passageway connecting the combustion chamber of the engine with a zone of lower pressure such as the cylinder sidewall exhaust port of a two-cycle engine. The valves are each one-way check valves operating oppositely to one another. The valve controlling the outlet port is normally biased to an open position and remains open when the engine is turned over at the relatively slow cranking speeds normally used to start the engine, relieving somewhat engine compression, thereby facilitating the starting of the engine. The outlet valve is flexed to a closed position in response to a rapid pressure build-up in the chamber caused by ignition of the fuel-air mixture in the engine combustion chamber, thereby sealing the compression release passage after the engine starts. A restricted passageway from the compression release chamber to the zone of lower pressure, such as the cylinder sidewall exhaust port, which passageway is independent of the chamber valves, slowly diminishes the chamber pressure to release each valve to return to its respective open position a predetermined time after the engine stops running. The restricted passageway and the outlet port of the compression release chamber may both be connected to the cylinder sidewall exhaust port by a hollow interior portion of the engine piston pin.
