    • In accordance with the invention, a plate-clamping mechanism is provided for clamping and locking flexible printing plates on a printing cylinder wherein a clamping jaw fitted into a cylinder cavity has a leading edge for clamping one end of printing plate which is (1) non-parallel to the cylinder's axis of rotation and (2) coincident with the periphery of the cylinder when the clamping jaw is in its opened or closed position. In addition, the clamping jaw's axis of rotation is parallel to the jaw's leading edge. Such a clamping jaw eliminates any void between the printing plate and the cylinder surface which might otherwise exist after the plate is tensioned and clamped: such a void is common in printing cylinders with clamping jaws having leading edges non-parallel to the cylinder's axis of rotation.

    • To eliminate the necessity for stapling together web portions which are derived, for example, from a rotary printing machine, and superimposed, and which should be joined together, one of the web portions is deflected in a separate path and has a strip of adhesive applied transversely to the direction of movement, for example by passing the web portion between a pair of rollers, one of which has adhesive applied thereto. The web is passed free from contact with the two rollers of the pair, and the uncoated roller, at least, is formed with a projecting strip providing an impression or counter strip to press the web portion against the adhesive coating on the other roller to thereby apply an adhesive strip thereon. The two web portions are then guided into contact with each other and folded in the folding apparatus transversely to the movement at a fold line (19). The projecting strip need not be continuous, but may be a row of projecting bumps or teeth (FIGS. 3, 4) which cooperate with similar bumps and teeth on the other roller, or with a strip.

    • For the rapid simultaneous engagement, disengagement and adjustment of all the applicator rollers at the plate cylinder of a printing machine, cam discs are mounted on the journals independently of the plate cylinder bearing. In an offset printing machine, the inking and damping rollers are each associated with their own cam discs. The cam discs are pivotable by means of drives, about the journals, with respect to adjustable stops for the engagement positions and end stops for the disengaged positions of the applicator rollers. The applicator rollers are mounted on rocker arms with respect to the stationary axis of the distributors preceding the applicator rollers and are adjustable with respect to the plate cylinder through the agency of adjustment means which co-operate with the cam discs. Adjustment of the applicator rollers during operation is effected by way of the cam discs which, in addition to the disengagement lobes, have cam zones for the roller engagement and adjustment.

    • A plurality of printing systems are stacked above each other to form a printing system tower assembly. Two such structures are provided, constructed in form of the mirror image. Each printing system, including a forme or gravure cylinder and a printing or impression cylinder, is closely associated with a drying chamber, within which hot-air dryers are located. The respective, stacked drying chambers are separated from each other by fire-resistant separating walls. A web is guided through the first printing system tower assembly and then, in similar manner, through the second mirror-image printing system tower assembly, to thereby permit prime and verso printing, in multi-color reproduction, without turning of the web. The dryers are energy-efficient since external radiation therefrom is effectively prevented due to their back-to-back positioning and construction.

Ambient air is conducted at the lateral sides to the recesses or grooves which, preferably, in cross section are circular and formed as semicircular grooves in the respective plates, and suction is applied essentially centrally, with respect to the width of the web (2, 40) by suction pumps (19, 23) which may apply an increading degree of vacuum to the recesses as the wall (6) of the chamber is approached. The width of the ridges adjacent the grooves or recesses can be determined by replaceable strips (35', 36') or by eccentric rollers (34, 35) so that the width of the pass-through slit between the plates can be matched to the thickness of the paper web (2, 40).

    • Printed goods (8,8") are aligned and positioned in predetermined staggered or shingled or imbricated arrangement on a transport conveyor (7,15) by placing, between distribution wheels (1,1') located axially spaced on a shaft (2,2'), a group of abutment wheels (4,4') which rotate with the distribution wheels but at a slower speed, for example by having an internal gearing matching a gear wheel (5) located on the shaft (2), the abutment wheels (4,4') being eccentrically positioned with respect to the shaft (2) by being guided in their movement by a disc (3,3') eccentrically positioned with respect to the shaft (2), and held in position by a suitable bracket or the like. The stagger spacing (x) between adjacent printed elements (8,8',8") will be determined by the spacing between abutments and, if conveyor (7) moves at the same circumferential speed as the abutment wheel, the spacing thereon will be maintained. Grippers (13) can be located to cooperate with the abutments to clamp the leading edge of the printed goods for transport from the distribution wheels independently of gravity, for example to gripper spring (14) of the conveyor chain (15).

    • To provide a compact drive arrangement for a plurality of axially oscillating or reciprocating milling rollers (11, 12, 13) used in inkers and/or dampers of rotary printing machines, a central gear (16) is provided, driven from the plate cylinder (5) of the printing system, and wide enough to permit axial excursion of meshing gears (11', 12', 13') coupled to the respective milling rollers, and engaged with the central gear.     • An apparatus and method for checking and automatically correcting register adjustment of a sheet-fed printing press at the same time as remote densitometric measurement of an ink density check strip for ink fountain key adjustment. To read alignment marks printed parallel to the ink density check strip, a second optical sensor is mounted on the ink density scanner already used in practice to traverse and read the ink density check strip. A register control computer accepts the signal from the second optical sensor, detects the relative positions of the scanned alignment marks, compares the relative positions to each other and calculates axial, peripheral, and skew register adjustments. Position information is exchanged between the register control computer and the corresponding ink density control computer. The measured positions of the ink density check strip segments, for example, can be used in part to determine the positions of the register marks.

    • A no-play drive for a printing press in which a main and auxiliary driving gear are both in mesh with a driven gear. The auxiliary driving gear is mounted upon a cylindrical hub formed on the main driving gear. A plurality of axially extending bores are formed in the main driving gear and a plurality of matching conical recesses are provided in the auxiliary driving gear. Balls fitted in the respective bores have associated coil springs for pressing the balls outwardly in the direction of the recesses so that the auxiliary driving gear tends to be forcibly rocked into a detented position with respect to the main driving gear in which the matching bores and recesses are all in respective alignment. The bores and recesses are so angularly phased with respect to the gear teeth that when the auxiliary driving gear is in its detented position the teeth on the auxiliary driving gear are angularly offset by a small amount with respect to the teeth on the main driving gear with the result that the engaged teeth on the driven gear are pinched between teeth on the driving gears for removal of play between the driving and driven gears. A retaining disc secured to the hub engages the outer surface of the auxiliary driving gear to hold the latter axially captive and for the purpose of developing frictional drag for damping oscillatory movement between the main and auxiliary driving gears which tends to occur in the face of fluctuating load.
