    • An appropriate binary sequence is used to create an acoustical treatment surface having desired parts with reflective properties and desired parts having absorptive properties resulting in the net effect of partially diffusive, partially absorptive properties. A genetic algorithm is designed to search for optimal 1D and 2D configurations for the acoustical treatments. A genetic algorithm essentially mimics the process of evolution that occurs in biology and is a known mathematical technique. During the course of genetic optimization, the fitness of individual sequences for the desired purposes is calculated. A useful fitness function includes terms that optimize the desired percentage of reflectivity and absorptivity. Through use of genetically optimized binary sequences, a curved surface may be constructed and optimized to find the best shape to achieve even scattering. The curved surface produces a dramatic improvement in effectiveness of diffusion.

Each elliptical arc A1 and A2 constitutes a portion of an ellipse E1 or E2 having a focal point located at a point F1 on line L, and shares an end point P which lies on the reflective surface and the line L. The angle .alpha.1 is chosen such that the surface of revolution R1 is convex with respect to an adjoining surface S1 and the angle .alpha.2 is chosen such that the surface of revolution R2 is concave with respect to the adjoining surface S1.

    • A two-dimensional sound diffusor is composed of a plurality of wells defined by a matrix of projecting elements. The wells, which have different depths and widths, are arranged in a repeating pattern. The boundaries of the wells and of the repeating pattern are defined by projections arranged on a base. The ends of the projections extend away from the base, terminating in an inclined face which is inclined relative to the base by an angle of 10.degree.. The incline may be rotated from one projection to the next, on a plane parallel to the base of the unit by 90.degree. or 180.degree.. This arrangement produces two dimensional sound diffusion.

    • A device is disclosed which allows an object to be tuned to an incoming sound wave magnitude and wavelength, such that the sound wave will alternatively be passed therethrough without detectable reflection or be completely reflected. The apparatus is intended to be mounted within a hollow object and adjust the perceived distance between the exterior walls of that object to mimic a single thick wall. A signal processing means is supplied which detects the sound wave magnitude and wavelength impinging on the wall facing the sound wave source. The wavelength is passed to the signal processing means, which transmits a complimentary signal to the second wall of the hollow object. The complimentary signal allows the hollow object to resonate as a whole as if it were a solid of a thickness much different from its actual thickness, allowing the sound wave to pass undisturbed therethrough or be reflected therefrom.
