    • A safety chain assembly 24 for securing a towed agricultural vehicle (not shown) to a towing vehicle 21. The safety chain assembly 24 includes a clevis hook 54 having two pin receiving openings 55; a latch member 60 having an attachment opening 62; a spring pin assembly 56, and an elongated load bearing device 36 having a securing opening 37. In the preferred embodiment shown in the drawings the elongated load bearing device 36 is a chain, but it will be appreciated that it could also be a wire rope or other load bearing device having a securing opening 37. Similarly, the preferred spring pin assembly 56 includes a biasing mechanism such as a spring 64 and a washer 66; a retention member 70 and a pin 72; the pin 72 having an annular groove 84, a head 85 and first and second ends 87, 89; the annular groove 84 being located proximate the first end 87 and the head 85 being located proximate the second end 89. The elongated load bearing device 36, preferably the chain 36, and the latch member 60 are interconnected to the clevis hook 54 by the spring pin assembly 56; The retention member is preferably selected from the group consisting of a spring washer and a snap ring and is preferably a snap ring. Methods of attaching and securing the safety chain assembly are also disclosed.

The ball-hitch assembly by means of a threaded stud-bolt (20) received into the threaded lower cavity, is to be attached to industry-standard draw-bar or bumper fittings as used on recreational vehicles, trucks and vans. A drawbar (30), has integrated therein a singular or plurality of load sensing devices (14). Overloading of the force measuring device is achieved by means of a mechanical stop fitting (28). Signals derived from this force measuring device are transmitted to a board computer providing an analog or digital representation of the forces acting upon the ball-hitch drawbar assembly.

    • A self locking chain device for locking a chain to a vehicle comprises an elongated cross bar having an upwardly extending arm attached to each end thereof. Each arm comprises first and second arbors which define a receiving slot for receiving a first interior link of a chain and configured in such a manner to enable two adjacent contiguous links to lock the interior link therein. Both first and second arbors are provided with cusps or projections for limiting passage of the chain link to and from the receiving slot. The first arbor also is provided with a concavity. A second contiguous or selected link, serving as a locking link, is slid over and down the first arbor and to the concavity, thereby double locking the first interior link since the opening between the cusps or projections is less than the combined diameter of the interior link and locking link. In this manner, the device effectively double locks the chain, prohibiting exit of the interior link without first removing the locking link from the first arbor.

    • An improved safety chain arrangement for linking a towing vehicle connected with primary towing arrangement to a towed vehicle. The invention assures control of the towed vehicle in the event of failure of the primary towing arrangement. A safety chain of adequate length and strength to meet standard safety regulations has a hook, snap, or other retention means at each end, and passes through a post in the towed vehicle, with each end of the chain connected to the towing vehicle, such as by looping the chain ends through an aperture on the towing vehicle bumper and suitably securing each chain end. The post has a storage compartment for storage of excess links of chain, and is provided with two slotted keyholes for passage and secure retention of links of the safety chain.

    • The vehicle weighing system for a towed vehicle includes removable stub axles and a hitch rigidly connected to a load support. The hitch and one or more of the stub axles are gauged in an identical manner. Two active electrical strain gauges are placed in a hole formed in the supporting member to be gauged, such hole extending normal to the direction of the load. The hole is placed adjacent the end of the supporting member which is remote from the load support and the two gauges are oriented to reduce the moment sensitivity of the system to a minimum. The hitch is provided with additional compensating gauges which are not responsive to strain, and the axle and hitch gauges are connected to form a measuring bridge circuit. The gauging holes are sealed by end plugs, a printed circuit board, potting compound and a boot, all of which are flexible so as not to interfere with the weight measurement.

    • A bolt arrangement for securing safety chain is provided with end stanchions and an intermediate stanchion through which the bolt is slidably and rotatably mounted. The safety chain is trapped by the bolt between an end stanchion and the intermediate stanchion. The bolt is operated by a plurality of operators rotatably and slidably mounted thereto between the other end stanchion and the intermediate stanchion, and comprises a plurality of flat pieces, each shaped and drilled to be mounted about the bolt and positioned side by side between a set of snap rings. Only by partially rotating all the handles together can they be slid laterally between two guides parallel to the bolt to free the chain from the bolt.
